Bank of America? Yeah, Right (scam alert)

First time I've gotten a spoofed name/number. Today (! Sunday !) I missed two back-to-back calls from (caller ID) 'Bank of America (800) 933-6262.' So yeah, I've been with 'em for 25 years, and only ever gotten a call from a local branch maybe twice, and their mortgage sales team (solicitors) in the early evening, so getting any call like this on a Sunday tingles my Spidey-Sense™.

Sure enough, Google sez it is indeed scammers.

Perhaps I would not have become so quickly suspicious if they'd called during banking hours.

Old-Timers will remember what Sgt. Esterhaus used to say which merits inclusion of this fuzzy animated GIF:

Any call that you get from any business these days should be a red flag.
I also consider emails a red flag.

If I have any doubts about any of the above, I'll either call the number on the card (If it's a bank) or go to their website.

I'm glad that you caught it.

I work in IT. I've known IT folks that got scammed. It usually happens with savvy people when they are tired and/or distracted so don't think.

Here's a financial advisor that apparently got screwed out of $50k. No way in hell would I go on TV and admit it.

I'm getting scam messages and calls almost daily!

The ones calling me mostly have Indian accents.
- FWIW their IT support people were trained by Western companies...

Weirdly I've also been getting some messages from Argentinian numbers.

Our land line used to be flooded with scam calls out of India...then one morn, 6:00 AM, I still sleeping, got awakened. Really pissed me off. Since then, I take the phone off the hook when I go to bed, replace it around 9:00 AM, when a legit call might come in. Since doing that, the number of scam calls has diminished considerably. Some days, no scam calls at all.

One scam call I kind of enjoy is the "Grandpa" scam...a caller saying he or she is my grandson or granddaughter. Always a tale of woe..usually a car wreck resulting in arrest. I give lots of concern & sympathy...wasting as much of the scammer's time as possible. Then I tell them that my daughter had no children, so I'm puzzled...... Gosh! Kids these days sure have foul language!

I got one of those calls. My grandson was supposedly arrested in Mexico. I asked a lot of questions and kept him on the line for a while until I got bored. Then I told him the no good punk can just rot in jail. And I hung up. As I have no kids, I am pretty sure I don't have nay grandkids.

I don't have time. It takes 2 steps to make my phone ring. One is have a Google number. The caller can't be a robot because they have to state their name and stay on the line to see if I answer. The other is my own trick although most phones have the feature.

So anyway... I see this ad on Facebook, figuring they're up to no good so I report it.

- Why would anyone want to clone a credit card?

And this is the reply from Facebook.

Figuring they made a mistake or something I re-report it and again same result.
