What's your choice of poison?
There's a bit of a story behind mine which I won't go into because it really won't matter to most. In short - I was on the search for a drink that I could enjoy by itself, but also with dinner - whether dinner was a steak or seafood. (I'll drink the cabernet or merlot with Italian - preferably a piedmont nebbioli - but I digress.)
Anyway - my choice is a rusty nail. Good old Dewars with Drambuie! If there is no Drambuie - an old fashioned will do as well. Edit - and yes, a rusty nail is in front of my right now!

Drank Manhattan's for several years in my 30's-40's. I have to say they are my favorites.

We were out for a fancy family dinner at a high end steak house. None of us would have been there but the granddaughter is working her way up that restaurant group's ladder so she gets some huge discount. IDK the details but we ran up a 700 dollar bill and no one seemed to care, like it was 50 bucks total. That's not a lot more than the tax here.
I mean lobster and filets were flying and I don't eat meat. I'm eating a wimpy pasta dish. Desert was over the top and we were doggy bagging anything that didn't melt. Probably walked out with 3 pieces of cheesecake at 12 bucks a pop. So I ordered a "dry Manhattan." The waiter didn't flinch but he later let on the both he and the bartender had to look that one up. It WAS smooth but seemed weak. I ordered it 'up'. Looked like a candyass drink. My parents used to drink all the old cocktails like in "Madmen." Well, my parents drank and smoked like any 50's family that ran a bit loose. Of course they divorced when I was 16. |

If ever I was going to have a problem with alcohol, it was after breaking up with my wife. I drank a lot of rusty nails and my tolerance kept getting better.

friggen twisted tea lights. bottles for a special occasion. I am total redneck trash when it comes to drinking.
I do like some (ok many) red wines too and keep a bottle of Hennessy in the kitchen for pan sauces or in case a rap video crew shows up and needs my house to film (can't drink that stuff- yuck).

Oh the big reds are a soft spot for me.
Just hosted some neighbors to our patio for sparking wine and 75F sunshine. |

Unsweet ice tea. Maybe a beer but unlikely
At home when driving isnt an issue bourbon and soda (coke zero or ginger ale), bourbon straight (Woodford Reserve) or beer |

Ooh, I love sake! That or a nice cab for mellowing out. When I want to get messed up, Irish whiskey. Or if I am suicidal, hot Korean chicks.

Depends on mood and season for me. Generally gin and tonic in warmer months (Noletts gin), or corona lights if I’m having several….in colder months Bourbon (straight or old fashioned) or a nice stout. Or maybe a margarita at times in the summer…

Only a good beer. No IPAs and not overly bitter. I love a German style Dunkle. Mmmmm.
I have never cared for cocktails or wine. Just Beer.

Pinot noirs. And they have to be fairly good ones. Not the very expensive ones. And I drink them as "just having a drink" and with any sort of meal
I'd love to rip into the beers but they make me very ill. |

Have cut way back on my drinking lately...but still allow myself a bit of slack when here or there with friends and family, and/or vacationing. These goodies can include:
Beer - still exploring IPA's (I know...I know...) Vino - Different reds (Merlot's, chiantis, piniot noirs, etc.) Whites tend towards chardonnays for spring and fall (or with Lobster anytime!), sauvignon blanc (from New Zealand is best), etc. Stronger stuff: Bulleit and Laphroaig are two of my "go-to's." Good mescal when I can find it, and small snifter of Grand Mariner with chocolaty desserts. Mixed: Manhattans (actually "East Rivers," as they include both sweet and dry vermouths), Negronis, and I'm a real sucker for a tall G+T when the weather heats up...Just Gordon's and Schweppes do fine, thank you...with a good twist of lime! Oh...and a good hit of Myers's Dark (rum), all by itself, as a "by the crackling fire" alternate to Laphroaig or Bulleit. Jeesh...did I say I was cutting back? |
