Someone Tried to Burn Down the Jug.

I've been to this bar many times over the years under several different names.

While this is a bar, the band drank at, as they literally did live and grow up down the street from this bar. As many know, the Jug mentioned in 3 Steps, wasn't actually an bar, but a liquor store a few miles away, and Jug, rhymes with Rug. Gene Odem includes this place in his tours, so the owner of the bar changed the name to the "Jug"

It is crazy that anyone, especially a regular, who it appears to have had a argument with a bartender from the Jug, at another bar a few days ago. I find it funny that a guy gets upset over a girl in a bar named after the bar in a song about a guy pulling a gun over a girl.

My Jax buddy of over 40 years called me yesterday with the news .... his lifetime & childhood friend Ronnie (RIP) lived behind the old white Pastime ... a TOTAL dive bar most of his life.... been through the opening in Ronnie's fence and in through the back door TOO many times to count .... the place was tiny .... barely big enough for the only pool table .... hey ... it's the Westside . Place opens at 6am and the locals were always lined up for a beer .... I have been in a few dive bars .... and it fits. I watched the news recaps after my bud called .... hell, I don't even recognize this new "high class joint" .... I almost started a thread ... decided to wait for Byron .

RIP Ronnie .... and Ronnie ...

RIP Pastime too

When we used to visit, I think the place was much smaller... the pool table was over on the left side as I recall and the open garage door side wasn't there (for patrons) ... tiny, tiny place.... no cuttin the rug, and three steps towards the door was for short legged people .

If they really wish to be "upscale", they should get rid of that coin-op Valley pool table and buy a Diamond...they play much better with tighter pockets & better cloth & rail rubber.

It is a interesting hole in the wall, and I have seen some craziness in there.

There use to be a woman who hung out there every day,* turned out that she lived in a tent in the* bushes behind the bar. I gave her one of my heavy Porsche jacket I bought at the Rolex one year that no longer fit me because winter was coming.

* I don't know if she still lives back there,* I haven't been there in quite a while and not since it was renovated.

They have a stage in the back,* but i don't think they use it much anymore.

Come on now, shift workers who get off work at 5AM need a place where they can have a drink and unwind before they go home and to bed..

Not quite a knife storey (but I have one of those too, maybe later)
I was sitting in the bar, just enjoying a beer, after talking to Pookie (the owner) about entertainment, c
When a regular comes in and bellies up to the bar and starts talking to someone about how he just got back out of jail. Well, then the other guy starts talking about gun, this gets up, goes out to his car and comes back in with a PIECE of crap pistol, showing it off and laying it on the bar.

I wouldn't take kindly to somebody trying to burn my establishment down. Even if I hadn't been there in a while.

Grew up in Westside Jacksonville (Ortega) and only visited The Pastime/Jug maybe twice. I remember it being rough and very small. The bigger hangout was a bar/liquor store not too far away called Monty's. In the early 80's I could order a vodka-tonic in their drive thru and be on my way. Thanks for the photo memories guys, special places for sure and love the Skynyrd influence: Lakeshore, Riverside, Murray Hill, St Johns Ave, Timuquana CC, Jax NAS and BVD area-OP. My father, a physician at St Vincents, had Lacy & Marion Van Zant (proud parents) both as longtime patients.

Met Byron a few years ago while at the Brumos Museum before the Rolex 24

My late Uncle Ray had a construction business in Jax. My buddy and I crashed at his place when we saw Mountain in concert at the Coliseum back in the 70's. Also surfed the North Jetty...a really good break back then...lots of juice!

Here's a pic that Byron posted when we first discussed "The Jug" here 16 years ago.... it's all a myth now... just ca$hing in on the LS legacy .... that band died with RVZ when I was a senior in hs. Even this pic is a fancy gussied up joint .... I remember the white building I posted earlier. The song is just a mythical story combining several neighborhood bars within a few miles of the Pastime.

Long live the Pastime

There were never any or many cars and no bikes back then ... it was a "walk to" dive.... nothing out back except my buddy Ronnie's house. I never entered via the front door

Ronnie had a "jam room" that backed up to the fence just a few feet from the bar. See that car on the right with the hood up?
That's Ronnie's place

RIP Ronnies...

Monty's is still there, but new owners, so instead of West Inn Cantina, it is Shores, I forgot, were you in the Forest or Old Ortega? I use to live on Carlisle, next to the elementary school. Timuquana is about the only thing that has not changed (and I hope that it never does) but sadly, the old Wallstreet bar has closed in 5 Points.
I'll snap some pictures and the old haunts if you want.
