I've always been curious, but not enough to check. I figure it's potentially like going into a bad neighborhood at night. You aren't necessarily going to get mugged or attacked, but...

I guess I'd probably boot into a generic Linux build in a sandbox before I went there.

Most of the VPNs are 'foreign owned'.
And there will always be a remaining trail no matter what you do.

My two sons, who are far more internet savvy than yours truly, have spent some time there. Very, very frightening place. It's where drug deals are made - really big drug deals, hits are requested and subsequently fulfilled, humans are trafficked, the most horribly exploitative kiddie porn, snuff films, and on and on. The very worst side of humanity. Big money changes hands for these services - it's how and why crypto currency got started. Big, big players live there, who will never be identified, much less "caught". There is, essentially, no "surfing". Specific URL's must be typed in to gain access to specific sites. Don't go there. Just don't go there. Clumsy amateurs are quickly spotted and identified by both sides - its ugly denizens and those trying to monitor them.

You don't use a VPN to surf the dark web. That would be useless. TOR browsers are designed to make the trail virtually impossible to trace.

There's a reason that the dark web is a lawless frontier where anything goes, because it is practically untraceable.

The marketplaces are interesting. Usually the drug marketplaces (silk road ect) purely sold drugs and did not sell sexually explicit materials, hitman, ect. That said, it’s a “Facebook marketplace” for illicit goods that one can’t sell on the regular web. Most market places use end to end encryption which is interesting as it’s a select few programmers around the world that are giving the central governments the middle finger. Same principle on the crypto… even though it’s rumored that bitcoin is a NSA program.

Firearms are an interesting aspect as it’s marketing to Europe and other civilized countries where they’re banned. In these countries, one can get arrested for downloading a 3d printed gun file. So the dark web really ties in the global economy working around all government oversight and taxation. That’s why there’s so much pressure to close down the markets when they pop up. Government’s arent getting their slice of the pie. To combat this. International packages from certain countries with legal drugs are often 100% inspected with hand held Raman scanners.

These aren’t big players. These are small and medium sized players breaking into the market. The big big players are the people that don’t need to utilize the dark web to hawk drugs and guns. Let alone use the postal services to deliver product. E.g. cartels and 3 letter agencies.

Dark web is boring as there’s no search engines. One must know specific addresses. As you stated. Don’t go to websites you don’t want to see certain stuff.

I would not recommend visiting the "Dark Web" but if you really want to there are videos on YouTube that describe how to do so safely.

Sounds like no place for this old man...."Most beautiful Women" thread here is about as raunchy as I care to get.
