mouse question

When I roll my mouse onto a link in a site...the hand appears with a finger pointing up, just as it always has done.

When I do the same in this Pelican site...it changes to a small dot with an arrow pointing up.
It just started doing this yesterday.

It's annoying because if you don't get just the dot over the link, it won't work.

Is it my mouse? (it's a wireless Logitech) and I'm using Chrome.

I dug out my old Lenovo laptop to see if it happens there.....which it doesn't.

That tells me that it's my mouse or the computer setting for the mouse.

My mouse pointer is an arrow most of the time and changes to a finger on occasion.

That's what mine always did...before yesterday. Now it's a little dot with a small solid arrow pointing up, above it.
Been trying to find the 'mouse settings' menu....having no luck so far.

Mine changes to a capital letter I but with particularly large serifs.

stevej37 03-20-2024 10:45 AM

Thanks....I think it's fixed.
I found the mouse settings and clicked on what I thought was the correct size and pointer style.
Powered it off and on....it's working as it should.

I don't know how any of those settings could have changed...oh well.

Computers eh. Out to get you I'm sure.

Just sent my computer to 'sleep' while I was out. Came back and my taskbar is all but empty. Some icons are not even on desktop. I guess I have to go to apps and find them.

Or I could restart.

Nope. That didn't do anything.

Looking back at what I did today to fix it....almost positive it was the restart that fixed it.
I should have tried that first.

I leave it powered on almost always....sometimes it's on for a few weeks before being powered off.
Might have to change that habit.

Always do that first .... (and unolugging for a minute on some things too) .... ALWAYS!

And never RTFM .... that's just bad juju :D

^^^ This one didn't come with a manual....it's a 14 year old dell :)

HobieMarty 03-20-2024 02:57 PM

Wow, I just realized that I haven't actually used a computer in many many years!!!

stevej37 03-20-2024 03:34 PM

The mouse itself has nothing to do with how the cursor appears. That is normally set by the OS, and can be changed by the website. The mouse is just a tool, like your finger or a laser pointer.

The only other thing that I can imagine (I used to use Logitech pointers, because they are awesome), is that if your mouse required logitech software to run, then that software could have a setting to change the pointer. I think the fancy software is usually only required for the fancier stuff. I used a trackball with a bunch of programmable buttons, so that required the software to run correctly. A regular mouse may not require it.

I dug deeper into the settings and found mouse settings. There were about a dozen different user adjustable settings for the mouse....size, speed, acceleration, scrolling speed, type of pointer, etc.

I made a few small changes and powered it off. Upon restart, all was good.
The changes I made are not even noticeable except for the cursor size...and I went back and set it to where it was before.

Now I know what to do first with the next problem.....pull the plug!

I'm sure there was no software with the mouse...but I was surprised that the laptop recognized and stated the Logitech name for mine.

Nope. That didn't do anything.

Type Win+R to get a Run box.
Type CMD to get a black Command box.
Type " sfc /scannow " to run a system file check. That should restore it. I hope.

Interesting parallel:
Last night both my desktop and start menu shortcuts for the flight sim both suddenly disappeared. I found and replaced them but that was odd. Definitely not a mis-click.

I don't have an admin account set up. Says it needs that.

Rusty Heap 03-21-2024 08:14 AM

he heh heh.

A CLASSIC trick to play on co-workers is to tape a Post It note to the bottom of their mouse with a little cute message...............that they'll eventually find out after their mouse isn't working anymore.......

HAH! Stumped a Prof Level 5 engineer at Boeing for a whole day and he even called a computer tech out to troubleshoot. Priceless and tears from laughter.

stevej37 03-21-2024 09:00 AM

When mine starting acting funny two days ago, the first thing I looked at was if the little receiver in the usb port was loose?....nope. The next thing...are the batteries going dead?

I took the cover off and was surprised to see two AA batteries side by side with both laying the same way. (+ to + and - to -
I didn't think they normally do that..and someone might have reversed one as a prank.

I switched one of them end for end and the mouse wouldn't work at all.:)
