i refuse to pay for metallica music.......lars just turns my stomach with his "mightier than thou" attitude.......
there are a couple songs that have an old school feel to them but they can keep it. i heard today that lars was again upset that the military was using metallica songs for interogation porposes..........F him.

Lars is a hypocritical whining fool, (who really cant play drums all that well anyway, take away his triggers and you'll see...) he complained about Napster, um Lars... remember how Metallica made it so big without commercial radio airplay and MTV back in the early days? by swapping tapes and records across the country. I still have some of the 12 inch releases prior to "Kill Em' All".
I remember when it was a badge of honor to wear a Metallica T-shirt. |

Lars is a jackass!
It reminds me of a flash movie I saw on www.newgrounds.com about Metallica vs Napster. It had James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammet being lampooned as such: "We don't mind when our fans pay $80 to come to one of our concerts" "We don't mind when our fans pay $50 for our t-shirts" "We don't mind when our fans pay $25 for our DVD" "but when our fans try to enjoy our music for free.... they just crossed the line!" etc etc You've gotta see the whole Flash Cartoon. It was hillarious!

I also had a problem with Napster. I NEVER used it because I did not think it was right. And, boy, did I get it from my friends. However, if I want to borrow music from a buddy, I go to him. Not a "central buddy" who has all of the "buddies" music.
And yes, handing out/trading music was how Metallica got exposure back in the day. That's how I first heard them. To try and compare that to Napster is, IMO, unfair and inaccurate. Expecting Master of Puppets over and over is unrealistic. Load and Reload had more Kirk and Jason input than anything to date. And if I recall, there has only been one band to sucessfully put out the same music for 20 years. AC/DC ![]() What was that band 4 years ago that people said was THE metal band of the future?? Right, I don't remember either. And I do think that the negative attitude that SOME people have toward the Napster bru-ha-ha will ALWAYS slant what that person thinks of new Metallica music.

Um, I've got some U2 Concert-Condoms, but I'd never wear them in public, like a badge of honour!
![]() That's actually a good question, Don. I don't dispute that they're a great band, I actually own a lot of their later albums (Metallica/Black Album, Load, Reload, S&M etc). I used Napster because I couldn't be bothered ripping my own CDs to MP3 to use on the PC, but I just don't particularly like their politics. It seems that just because somebody's music is influential, they are then automatically cleared to pass commentary on anything they please. Everyone should learn from Pearl Jam's political swipe at GWB during a recent concert where half the audience walked out... With the whole Napster debacle, I would bet you that out of all of the content being shared online, Metallica would have ranked pretty low among all of the titles available. Much more modern/top 40 music would have changed hands before people went to download Metallica stuff, and even then, it'd be their old stuff. Online content sharing is great for hard-to-find stuff. I don't know the entire story with Lars appearing before Congress, but I think that sort of action would have been better undertaken by somebody more knowledgable and perhaps representative of a wider range of artists; a record label, or perhaps an industry regulatory/advisory chairman. Lars portrayed himself as a pompous chump, out of his depth and sprouting random internet buzzwords as though they directly affected his hip pocket, which saddened me greatly.

That said, I haven't heard a single sound-byte of their new album, so I am going to check it out.

Don,
You sound like a true Metallica fan. I can respect that, but I don't like the music they are making anymore. I don't think all their albums should sound like "Puppets", in fact I think Kill 'em all, Lightning and Puppets were all very different sounding, but awesome in their own right. I personally don't care about the whole napster thing, I don't use it but not for some huge moral or ethical reason (I just have a REALLY slow computer). I like music on a very visceral level, and Metallica just doesn't appeal to me anymore. There are a bunch of bands that I feel this way about. Slayer for instance, hasn't had a good album since they lost Dave Lombardo like 10 years ago. In my opinion, another band that hasn't lost a thing over the last 20 years is King Diamond/Mercyful Fate and he will NEVER get airplay. For the rest of them at least my cds will last for ever. I don't know about you guys, but I don't know what I would be listening to if I was a kid today. I couldn't imagine high school without Dio, Maiden, Slayer, Ozzy (with Randy of course), Metallica (the good years as I call them), Floyd, Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc. What do they have today? Disturbed? Godsmack? Puddle of Mudd? Yuck. Or even worse, that hip-hop crap - .45 to the temple please. |

Just bought St. Anger yesterday. After all the anticipation of its release, I just cannot get over how bad it sucks! The vocals suck, the lyrics suck, the sound quality sucks and the tin can drum beat on EVERY fuc@#ing song is almost impossible to get through. They've gotten progressively worse on the last couple of CD's and this album was supposed to be a return to the raw Metallica but a garage quality recording does not equal a return to their roots. They're done!

Since when did Lars start using triggers ??(sorry, watch the DVD of St Anger.,.,No Triggers used.) I think you might be thinking of Danny Carry from Tool, that guy is trigger happy.
OVRSTR : The album is suppost to sound that raw. Thats the way they wanted it. Watch the DVD, its alot better then the CD. Plus, at least this album is harder and faster then Black, and the Loads.

911SCPILOT...I hear you. I know they wanted that sound but that still does not equal a "good" album. I'll have to check out the DVD like you said. The lyrics still suck though... "lifestyle/deathstyle" give me a break...maybe James should hit the bottle again for some inspiration.

I look at it this way...
Listen to anything prior to And Justice For All and their music is epic, grand, almost operatic. In fact I always thoguht Metallica was like the modern day Wagner. Go listen to Master Of Puppets and tell me that is not epic, sweeping music. Hard, fast, yet musically it goes in many different directions with a cohesiveness that works. That is what i loved about Metallica. They could do a 10 minute long metal opera. Then the black album came out and it was like, Metallica is doing singles now. While I liked some of the songs on there, that sense of adventure wasnt there. Then they followed that up with the aptly titled Load. |

I'm more of a later Metallica fan. I was in my teens when Black came out and I thought it was the best album I had ever heard. Load was pretty different, although there were a few really good songs there. Reload kinda lost me (Unforgiven II??) but I thought S&M was superb.
I would have loved to have been there when that gig was on.

Ok, I just saw the video clip where they play in the prison. I missed the title, but I think it was "St Anger".
It wasn't bad, and I quite liked the warning they're given before entering the exercise yard: "This state has a no-hostage policy"... ![]()
