Can someone explain this strange circuit breaker?

I got a new service box installed and they put in a couple of circuit breakers that I've never seen before. They have 4 switches and I'm wondering if all 4 need to be switched off for 240v or what.

I'm trying to label all of my circuits, but the electrician labeled the outer two switches "surge". I'm confused. And while I'm asking questions - My main power disconnect shows 2 - 100 amp circuit breakers - does that mean I have 200 amp service?

It's 100 amp service and the quad breakers have the two center breakers handle tied, and the two outer ones are handle tied for a 240v circuit. The outer tie can be removed if one wants 2 separate 120v circuits. That means you can have what they call a multi-wire branch circuit, or MWBC too, but you must leave the tie. You don't see those much now with the AFCI breaker requirement. Individual neutrals, not one for 2 120v circuits using 12-3 cable.

Milt is correct. 100 amp service.

The breakers are connected to the buss bars and will provide 240 VAC from phase to phase to a load. Range/Oven/Drier/AC... 120 VAC from each phase to neutral is utilized for most loads in the home. The outer tied breaker marked "Surge" is connected to a whole home surge protector that should be mounted close to the electrical panel.

I just had solar installed this year and part of the process included upgrading my utility service box. My old Zinzer box did not have anything like these breakers. And yes, they installed a whole house surge protector - I didn't realize the outer breakers marked "surge were for that. |

They go through a surge protector. They are still circuits.
