Autopilot is fine, but it doesn't allow you to check your emails while driving. End of case.
Whether "defective" or just not as capable as believed, nothing about "self driving" is supposed to allow the operator to not pay attention to his surroundings.
There should be a retinal scanner incorporated where if you look away from the windscreen for more than a half second a piercing 120 db alarm goes off in the vehicle.

The recall that Shaun posted is to add a system to KEEP the driver paying attention. The recall is not about making the level 2 system more robust. It is an additional nanny.

In other news that should make most really happy...

Reading the link above. It explains exactly
how Level 2 systems are supposed to be used.
Tesla is a level 2 system.

Personally even with a level 3 system I would pay attention to what the car is doing. I'm not giving up full control of the vehicle.

"Shallow cuts...."

It is always tragic when such accidents occur--very sad.

Thoughts and prayers to those affected.

There are gubmint regulations and organizations that are involved with the emergence of tech like AV tech. People in these organizations have jobs to do.

Some folks might express some empathy with their sympathy and "outrage."

Empathy?

People design and test the AV tech. People build the cars. People hire the people that do those things. People in companies like Tesla, Ford, GM. Boeing. Lots of people in those companies in all sorts of roles.

They are not "slaves" forced to work on these things in these companies.

The vast majority of these people care about other people and do not want tech from the companies for which they work to hurt people.

I remember interacting with an Uber employee that bought a 915 transmission from a friend a few years ago. He also posted in these forums about his 911 project.

This was right after a fatal accident involving Uber tech in AZ. I was reminded that folks in these companies are just like other folks.

This was right during the time that Uber and alphabet/google/waymo were just about to start a huge trade secrets trial on.... AV tech.

He was a named defendant in that case, so his name was in the news every day.

I remember "jarts."

"And this sort of product defect opens the door for them to impose their irresponsibility and ignorance upon the rest of us. In this case, resulting in a needless death. I cannot think of another consumer product, having demonstrated a potentially lethal defect (even if it has to be operated by a fool to manifest), that would be allowed to remain on the market and in common use "

Really?

I can...

In this case, why do you think "THEY" allow this product to "remain on the market?"

" An actual design defect contributed significantly to the death of this motorcyclist. Pretty much any other product would be removed from the market, and their owners would be asked to stop using them until the design issues that contributed to the death are thoroughly investigated and corrected. That should be the case here as well. It's astonishing, really, that it is not. "

"Case closed?"

I remember "the Honda line of 3-wheelers"

The regulators can and will step in when a product is deemed too unsafe for the market.

I also remember all the stories about people putting the Winnebago on cruise control and crawling into the back for a refreshing nap while the motorhome whisks them to their destination.

Yikes... it is century 21 by some accounts.

https://electrek.co/

Perhaps affording fewer "shallow cuts" for those so inclined? "Deeper cuts?"

It ain't Walter Cronkite.

But maybe now the "questions" can be more refined.

Autopilot in these is just a driver aid, just like it is a pilot aid in airplanes and boats. Full self driving is a driver aid as well and is probably even worse named than Autopilot. Both are level 2 requiring the driver attention at all times. Not that everyone does, you get a false sense of security when things work most of the time.

Used responsibly they are probably fine all the time. Some people are unable to use anything responsibly. Probably the only part of an analogy with firearms or any other product.
