Garage engine stand
Can anyone recommend a good garage motor stand. I bought a Miata motor (approx 300 lbs) to tinker with.
Thanks in advance. |

I don't remember the brand, but I got mine back in 95 at a place like Advance or O'reilys. Don't remember the name off the top of my head. Was reasonably priced and is sitting in the garage with a small block Mopar engine on it right now. No complaints.
Is one that you can rotate the engine on.

I'd go to Craigslist and get one of the multitude of used ones. Find one that's cheap and close to your house.
Some of them on PDX CL are 25 bucks.

The cheapest of the cheapos will hold your miata mill. I would look for one with 4 wheels instead of 3 though . I have almost lost one before moving it around , once that weight starts to go over, its hard to stop it .
Too bad, I just gave a few away , they were just taking up space

Some are made foldable, easily stored for another project...a feature to consider if you plan on doing more.

Facebook marketplace, 4 wheels, absolutely not 3....I like the "U" shaped ones, but the "I" would be ok, just not the "T". definitely not the T
My preference was something made of American steel from 20-40 years ago, $30 and a 10 minute drive.

Definitely go with the 4 wheel model, regardless of the engine you are working on it will be stable…and safe. I bought a 4 wheel stand at harbor freight ($75) and did a 700+ lbs big block Mopar engine on it. So, do not pay too much on Craigslist or FB marketplace.

I saw an engine stand recently that had a geared system to rotate the engine. I’m sure it costs more, but would make it easier to rotate the engine incrementally.

Around here people think their used tools are worth almost that of new. There is a place next city over from me that sells china imports to swap meet vendors. They sell all kinds of tools, building supplies, some garden and a fair amount of cooking gear, a lot of the CG is commercial.
Prices were always about HF with a 20% coupon. I haven't been in an HF for 3 years so IDK what they are about anymore. The point is that a lot of the same tools FS on CL are priced at new WRT to this wholesale place. That is just one of the downsides to living in a metropolitan area. People want 25 bucks for a duffle bag most would throw away. I can't say what they actually get because I don't buy things from CL much. Only if I spot a real good deal which is snapped up in an hour. Flippers. I looked at engine stands this morning on CL just for grins (that's assuming I would grin. mostly I shake my head). All were 3 point and prices were around 100. One for 40 in Las Vegas. Sure thing, bud. HF has a 4-wheel model today for $49.99. |

Thanks everyone. I’ll take a ride to HB tomorrow and se what they have. That little motor is heavier than I thought.
