Old helmets - toss?
Cleaning out garage. Two helmets - Pryotect SA2000, Bell M2005, both XL and over 20 years old. Was going to put them on my local Buy Nothing (give away free stuff) group. But thought about it, and feels only ethical thing to do is to throw them in the trash. Agree?

I wouldn't toss them myself.
They can be used for decorative purposes, depending on their appearance. Some helmets would need a new paint job. Some look good right out of the box! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1714943964.JPG |
My old one was in very good shape so I took it to the Good Will.
|
^^^ yep...our local Goodwill store is great at taking anything that is in good shape.
I'm there every week dropping off stuff. |
IDT it's an ethical thing. A helmet is better than no helmet. I too have 2 out of date lids. I need to garage sale them. Thanks for reminding me.

my arai manual says the foam cushion decays over time and is next to useless after ten years.
i have a few old helmets laying around. the cat uses one as a bed. the rest are just souvenirs i'm too lazy to throw out. i don't ride with them. |
Right after my bike/car accident.....the police and insurance company demanded my helmet to examine it for fractures.
It was fine....and I still use it today. |
A helmet reminds you of the dangers involved in not wearing one. Any suggestion that trends toward safety is a good idea.

When my daughter was moving, I hid an expired helmet in the U-haul trailer, just to make her wonder why.
We're kinda goofy that way. She likes it. Still has it on an end table. Still has my name and blood type on the side as required for racing. |
I have a bell that is 10 years old. The fabric is starting to degrade and flake….
I plan to replace it with a risqué Icon. |

In the fire service ( and in industry and construction..) helmets have ten year from date of manufacture, end of service Life. Mainly because of material degradation.

The SA is good for refueling at and endurance race. I bet a champ / lemons / lucky dog team would take it.
My old SA is a decoration in my office with all of the tech stickers on it from when I was way more active than I am now. |
Can also be used as man cave decoration .

Take an angle grinder to it and put one or two deep flat spots on the top and side, rub it on some asphalt and fresh grass to give it some stains and create a story of getting upside down at the Runoffs in your Swift just as you were about to take the lead in your class -and finally become a Runoff champion, your childhood dream - because you had to swerve to avoid a mother duck and her brood that were walking across the track. Your driving career was over because the cost of replacing the front half and most of the suspension and the transaxle (not to mention the bodywork) was too high and you have two kids in college, but the helmet saved your noggin and the ducks all survived, so it was totally worth it.

Ok, I think shop decor sounds good!

My Snell 1970 Bell helmet vs my Snell 2015 Bell helmet. It’s amazing how much bigger the newer helmet is. 7-5/8 vs XL.
The foam liner on the inside of the old helmet has come loose. I thought about sending it back to Bell, to see if they could re-line it. I used The old helmet when I had my go kart. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1714962480.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1714962480.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1714962480.jpg |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1714962590.JPG I have 2 more helmets I don't use plus a construction hard hat I plan to repaint and badge with various motorcycle stickers I have collected. Hey why not have some fun? :) |
I have more than just old helmets I need to throw out but I did actually throw out an old Shoei motorcycle helmet just a couple weeks ago. I still have my old Shoei automotive helmet like Senna used to wear and I keep talking about getting a Senna paint job on it. Unfortunately the helmet came in two visor openings and mine is the wider one so it’s not really Senna tribute correct.
