Cell phone use in schools

Los Angeles school district passed a ban on cell phones in schools yesterday. CA wants to make it state wide.

I think it should be countrywide though enacted at the district level. Same for school uniforms.

What do you think? Only did Yes ban / No don't ban on the poll. There are a lot of variations to discuss.

Would you play on your cell phone in any university course that you ever took?

Everyone knows the answer

No phones, students in uniforms and a reasonable hair policy, all strictly enforced. Makes everyone as equal as possible.

Another dog and pony show. Just blowing hot air, so what if they pass law? Its the enforcement and consequences they need to work on. In LA, there is a no cell phone rule already in place but does anyone do anything about it? My kids tell me that when they are bored or have to watch a mindless film due to teacher too busy to teach, they play with their phone. Just about the entire class does and not a thing is done about it. The teacher is on their too at the same time.

You will never make them equal, but establishing and enforcing dress and hair codes, having a uniform and eliminating phones in school, levels the field to some extent. $500 tennis shoes, ridiculous hair, sagging pants, $1K phones, etc., have no place in school where children should be focused on education.

Agreed. However, it doesn't work in reality. Both of my kids went to a Catholic HS with those rules. The rules were enforced on the some students and not others so as not to offend. One can guess which students got a pass on the rules. I'd see them at afterschool events still in uniform, mainly boys, shirts untucked, long hair, earrings. All of which was against the rules.

why would school uniforms and cell phones be discussed in the same thread?

school uniforms are a dumb idea. always were.

cell phones in the class room, probably a bad idea. but on school grounds ... seems ok to me. just not during class.

First two yes, hair style policy has to be carefully crafted if at all. It's fine to create school community standards while in class. But that can't extend outside of class and hair style policy is challenging since it could dictate, or be perceived to dictate, what students look like outside of school.

With phones banned, the kids of conservative parents would be unable to accurately report on DEI and WOKE material being delivered by the members of the teacher unions. No wonder they want the ban. My daughter literally smuggled materials not intended for parental eye from her high school back in 1984...she also tape recorded classes without teacher knowledge, my first awakening to the indoctrination going on. I owed her an apology for not believing her at first. The teachers Union called it "values clarification" back then. I recognized it for the leftist social engineering it was.

Take a look, especially the uniform link on the site. Uniforms work and it is as easy as can be and kids actually like them.

I did. Complete no brainer.

To cell phones, stop it now. The solutions are easy as well.

I would not teach a class that allowed cell phones in class. In meeting now, and when I was a major program manager, no brings or brought their phone to my meetings.

Left public school after 9th grade and went to a Jesuit all boys school. Basically went from Fast Times at Ridgemont High to Dead Poet Society. Jacket and tie mandatory. No girls. This eliminated distractions, taught discipline and left me no choice but to focus on my education and prepared me for future career that required more jacket and tie and a hell of a lot of discipline

Cell phones in school are a very bad idea

The uniform code seems reasonable and economically feasible. I like it.

It’s interesting that the uniform code says… “Holes in pants are only permitted below the fingertip level”.

As mentioned, the rule is only only as good as the enforcement. What stops teachers from currently telling students…do not use your phone in my classroom and if you do, you’ll have to bring it to my desk and pick it up after class.

We talked to my kid's teacher couple years ago at back to school night and asked about their cell phone policy because my kid mentioned most kids have their phone out through the class period. His reply was, "sure, I can take their cell phone but if anything happens to any of the student's phone, he is entirely responsible for a full replacement". The kids jsut need to claim their phone was in perfect working order and now its not. Then they WILL get a new phone and its out of the teacher's azz. We were floored and completely understood his position.
