That was the launch of “Kanalkampf” which was basically a battle to destroy shipping in the English Channel. In retrospect it was the beginning of the BoB, but at the time Hitler was still thinking of an invasion of the England. The war escalated from there until Goering launched “Adlertag” in August (13?), which was the battle to wipe out British Fighter Command. That was the beginning of the Battle of Britain as depicted in the movies.

Not Battle of Britain Spitfires, rather Mark XIIs from much later in the war.

Some unbelievably brave bastards! And for the civilians on the ground, they were the true definition of “stiff upper lip.“

The Supermarine Spitfire gets all the press, but in fact there were more Hawker Hurricanes used in the Battle of Britain than Spitfires, and the Hurricane played a more important role. Spitfires were just coming on line, while the Hurricane had been in production for 5 years or so by mid-1940. The Hurricane was the workhorse of the Battle of Britain and shot down more German bombers than the Spitfire did.

I read Peter Townsend's account of the Battle of Britain when I was in high school and became kind of obsessed with it. I set out to build a model of every airplane used in the Battle. Somehow over the years the built collection got lost. When I retired I started collecting the kits so I could build the collection again. It's still on my to-do list.

The V-1 & V-2 rockets came into play in 1944.

"The development of these rockets was a choice borne of the post-World War One Treaty of Versailles, which stipulated that the Germans could not possess heavy artillery, making no mention of rockets."

The rate gyros from those rockets were evolved into the Minuteman 1 ICBM guidance & control.
