Connect an electric fence to window AC?
 

If an electric fence is connected to a window air conditioner unit, will it hurt it?
A friend of mine called and said he lives in such a bad area he removes his AC at night cause he is so worried about someone coming in through the window!
I said why not hook an electric fence to it!
He has not done it yet, and now I am wondering if DC voltage running on the outside tin work could hurt it.
Your thoughts?

Can't he just strap/bolt/screw the AC to the window frame?

There’s rubber grommets inside and the shell is used as a ground… I would go for it and see what happens…


Btw, in a bad neighborhood. I would expect someone to steal the ac before climbing in.

I’ve seen the metal cages for the ac window units. Like bars for the window with a shelf.

I mean....ideally he should move to a safer neighborhood! Yikes!

Be very careful. Booby traps have been illegal for decades.

Just install a little garden pond and fountain under the ac window unit and stock it with Piranha. The dripping condensate will maintain the water level!!! Problem solved!!!

I have electric fences around parts of my garden. You can put up an electric fence around it, but you can’t connect it to the ac unit. The fence wire is charged with a pulse of about 17,000 volts every 10 seconds or so. When something or someone is grounded and touches the wire, they get zapped. The current is very low, so it won’t kill anyone, but it is NOT pleasant to encounter. Establishing a good ground is the biggest problem. When the ground is dry I go out and spray water on it to improve its conductivity.

I can see this just pissing off an intruder and then they will break in through the front door and kick his ass.

I seen them all the time. Homeowners use them to keep bears from breaking in. Especially, on vacation homes.

I know for sure I have electric wired my windows, as we have brears the size of freight trains here!

SOme have a sense of humor, others will look right past you and do what they want.
BUT
Back on the subject, - will the electric fence hurt an AC unit?
That is the subject matter at hand.

Tell your friend to secure the AC unit so that it’s more work getting in that way than breaking glass through another window.

The chassis of the AC unit is tied to the incoming VAC electrical ground. Why?? To prevent voltage on that chassis shocking people. That’s it. It’s a safety ground. Internally the chassis might provide a path for DC return for control electronics and noise shunt but that’s it.

Putting that DC voltage onto the VAC safety ground which connects to ALL the rest of the plugged in Electronics in the home AC and DC, is now subjecting ALL of the house electronics to those DC pulses before finding its way to the power panels where the electrical safety ground circuit wiring is actually tied to local ground.

Newer ground fault circuit breakers are likely to trip all over the place as well.

Do not suggest this to your friend. Do not do it.

I'd place the electric fence wire a couple of inches out from the bottom window, and a bit below the window. And have it suitably insulated so the current doesn't earth/ground into the house. Then a small (disclaimer) notice right there to say don't touch the electric fence. Remember, the electric fence is to scare off the cat/dog/beer that has been repeatedly scratching at the window.

Another option... Trip wire alarm.

They sound like a .22 going off right next to your ear.

Buddy of mine in High School when we had underdash 40 watt Kraco Power Boosters and underdash Cassette Decks, he taped RAZOR Blades on the underside of the unit.......so when they "grabbed and pulled"........ucking fugly mess. And no more robber.
