question on Cayman speakers?
It seems that I may have a blown door speaker. Took a friend to pick up his car today and he turned the music up a bit and realized that he had to turn the volume knob a lot more then his car just to hear the same loudness only to my surprise that door speaker no longer producing sound. Off to search for a new speaker. I am confuse, like anything else nowdays, a ton of reading and everyone has an opinion on the best way is to just mount a light bulb. It calls for 5.5" but it seems a 6.5 will also fit. Then there's the fooking 4" speaker and I can't seem to buy unless I fork over 400 bucks. I read on about the difficult of getting the tweeter out. Is Porsche the only car company that make these thing do difficult to get in and out. WTF is the odd size tweeters? some say there's a center dash other say they are on both side of the dash. Any of you taken these thing out? I do not have the Boss system and I believe it has the premium sound package. 09 Cayman S. Where to look for concrete info? Been looking at Crutchfield there's so many brands. don't need to pay 600 bucks for a set but 300? Should be good enough?

I bought replacements for my non-Bose 987.1 off ebay for about $30. Lots of racers strip their cars down and have the interior parts. Ten minute job to swap them out. The non-Bose still has no bass, so they sound tinny even if you have good speakers.

Crutchfield is a solid resource for car audio.
Provide your specific car and audio configuration and you get a list of speaker options. They indicate if the option fits your vehicle or if modification is required. They also sell speaker mounting adapters and wiring harness adapters. I just used them for front door and dash speakers for the wife’s 2018 Crosstrek. Got the Audiofrog G60 component set with 6” midrange for the door. The factory location is 6” x 9” so Crutchfield provided the adapter. |
I've got the standard speakers, but I also have an aftermarket head unit (10yo Pioneer) and amp. I get pretty good bass out of the standard speakers. It's the system that is less than optimal (at least with the standard system).
If you want upgrades, the man to talk to is Rod Birch from Car Audio Innovations. https://www.caraudioinnovations.com/ He's been doing stereos (and specializing in Porsches) for at least 25 years. He used to be very action on Rennlist back when it was via email and run by the guy, John Dunkle, I think. The usual issue that comes up with speakers is that the foam disintegrates and they start to rattle. I've had that happen to both large door speakers, and now the pass' mid-range speaker is rattling. I get decent sound out of the stock speakers, but I believe that's because I've got the aftermarket head unit and amp. |

I was shocked at how good things sounded with the new head unit and amp. The head unit (double din touch screen) includes a thing where you connect a microphone, and then get out of the car, the stereo then plays reference sounds listening to the input from the microphone and adjusts various settings. You can then tweak the settings (which I did). That setup and tweaking made a huge difference. Quote:

If you're happy with the size I'd be highly inclined to find a stock replacement, used off ebay.
Pennies on the dollar, plug in and go. Factory stereos these days are pretty specific to impedance, size and tuning. Throwing aftermarket speakers to fill holes with a 3-way front factory setup isn't really going to make things better. Factory amp just isn't set up to use a 2 way replacement speaker. I wouldn't be too hot on modifying to fit aftermarkets unless you know someone who has done it before --and it worked. rjp |

Not sure about the non-Bose system, the door speakers are mid and woofer, so I wouldn't assume the woofers would be full range but I am not familiar enough with that system.

I ended up with a pair or 6.5" two way and a under seat 8" sub woofer that was recommended by the tech I spoke at Crutchfield. It arrived yesterday. I am going to tear into it when I have a bit of time. Going on a week road trip with my boys in a couple days now that he has his dr lic.
Tech asked if I listen to music loud and the the type of music I listen to. Since I don't crank it up like I use to at 18, there's no base coming of those speakers and it will sound like a transistor radio from the 70s, the sub will help tremendously. We shall see. Now I need to sneak a power wire through the firewall from the battery. Can't seem to see an opening or grommet. The beauty of this sub is that it will receive speaker signal as a remote turn on so I no longer have to get to the back of the radio or a fuse that's hooked up to the ignition. I have to figure how to get the speaker wire to the amp. Maybe the easy way is to splice it off one of the speaker in the back by the shock tower. That's a lot of stuff to take out just to get at those speaker wires. Suggestions? |
