Glad that hasn't happened here or on Rennlist, as I don't do Facebook. Just got my 25th anniversary Rennlist T-shirt in the mail.

I participate in several online forums that have not only remained active, but have grown with newer younger members in the past couple years. "Fakebook" has a lot of downsides, the worst of which is a bunch of blowhards that don't know what they are opining about. On one of the motorcycle forums I participate on, we have to deprogram the newbies to flush the bad and wrong information they picked up on Fakebook Groups. Reddit has a lot of these misinformed groups too.

I’d guess that the above is less true for niche groups with a strong following of loyal and informed participants/supporters.

I don't think so, general discussion on cars on Facebook is absolute garbage with inconsistent participants. Forums have consistent participation with valuable input and knowledge that can be cross-referenced easily with searches.

I'm sure Facebook has plenty of yahoos yapping on about things, but for people who actually care forums are still the best option.

Interesting article, though, thanks for sharing.

I suspect that depends upon the subject. If the subject is niche enough or exclusive enough, I suspect the members and expertise is just as good. I'm sure a civic group would probably be horrible with lots of bad info and limited good info. If there was a group dedicated to 356s, it would probably be very different.

discord style platforms seems to be where all the forum talk went, not facebook.

I don't have Farcebook. I am on several car related forums related to the make of vehicles I have. Vehicle brand specific forums can be a good source of information when performing DIY car repairs. I am also on a couple of boat and sailing forums as well. Sadly, I do not own a Porsche, but I do like hanging out with y'all.
This forum seems to be doing very well also.

Well-written article. I used to know the author about ~25 years ago and I've enjoyed seeing his writing. Of the automotive fora I'm on for my various cars, this is the best one. Many of his points about the effects of migration to forums ring true for me, but I've still had good experiences with some of them. The classic Saab 900 one is the best in my experience, I think. For one of my cars I started out even more old-school, when all the enthusiast activity was on a mailing list, before migrating frist to forums and then to Facebook. That one is still around, populated by a small number of us that have been on it for 25 years - no significant activity but it's nice as sort of an OG's club.

Which are some popular ones?
Do you use any of them?
Live chatroom seems limited for car DIY

Regardless the topic, Facebook Groups are the devil's creation. They're proliferated by three types of members. Those working on their side hustle by selling things of questionable value, those devoid of knowledge presenting erroneous information as expert answers, and a plethora of people simply complaining about their perceived plight.

Why is this? It's because Facebook isn't designed to support conversation. It's designed to be a place for virtual post-it notes and photos.

One last note. IMO it's obvious Facebook only created and pushed Groups because it facilitates the targeted advertising you see on Facebook.
