Good god, what a story. That guy would have met my 12g Winchester Defender once I heard him threatening the old lady. I have a soft spot for old people and a cold, merciless heart for criminals like that.

I'm a contractor and I always get a deposit up front. Just enough to cover restocking fees on materials in the event they bow out of the contract (which never happens). I also do not touch a house without a signed contract. That guy won't be in business long doing business like that

Greg, he doesn’t need to be in business in the sense that you or any legitimate contractor is. He flys by night.

Thank goodness the lady wasn't a push over. I suspect lots of old folks would have caved under the physical and mental intimidation. Thank goodness the lady has her son and you around.

I wouldn't be concerned about the nude roof, but I would be concerned about the quality of the shingles on the roof (probably the cheapest crap available). But then the new roofers can deal with that.

So glad you were there to help out and stop this POS crook from taking advantage of your neighbor. I hope they prosecute that POS and lock him up.

Crazy story Jeff. I always wonder how many of the same type scams they get away with for every one they get called out on? This certainly wasn't the first time they pulled this scam.

100% what Cairo94507 said.

Months ago, a bunch of folks were getting their roofs replaced by the same contractor. Hail was the culprit, of course.

If they put the guy out of business, his employees might explore a future with the USSS's new Sloped Roof Division.

Here's a picture of the back part of our 6000 sqft house at 9:15AM the morning the crew showed up to install our new roof. They pulled up at 6:30AM and by 7AM had covered all the shrubs etc with tarps to protect them and had workers on the roof.

Here's a picture of the shingles and paper that was installed. This was a $33k job - $31.5k paid by insurance

The job was finished around 5PM.

Just had a new metal roof installed. $1000 up front and a signed contract listing all materials and the scope of the labor.when they three quarters finished we paid him half the money owed. Balance upon completion. It went as smooth as melted butter!

Yep, getting a new roof is LOUD AF, and the noise never ends except if there's a lunch break. The only thing worse is foundation work for slab on grade. Crazy stuff. They jack up the house and then use the house as a pile driver. Crazy, jack up the house, and then drop the house.

I'm having my house painted soon, got the bid in late May, told the painter I was going to be away until July 6th, but paid a $300 deposit. He said he'd get the HOA permit and would start July 8th. He texted while I was away and asked if they could start early. I told him, as long as he needed absolutely nothing from me or Mrs. Lee until our return, he could get started. He sent a crew out to start power washing and called me in Germany to ask if I had the permit yet and which colors I wanted. Geezus. Crew packed up mid-wash and left. Now we're looking at early August.

That "roof tear off" story almost sounds like the crew were "Travelers" pulling one of their scams. Here it's usually silver paint on mobile home roofs and slurry sealing driveways.

Easy to take advantage of old folks. They are easy prey. Many of these roofing guys have connections with the local insurance guys/appraisers and pay them kickbacks...and collect through them. Once they do the work, they overcharge and put a mechanic's lien on the home if the owner does not pay. Most will cave and pay... or possibly even pass away before they even know.
