Update, July 24, 2024, 3:00 p.m. EST: Zack Alder, one of the crash victims, is lucid and in good spirits following the crash. In a video posted to TikTok by his sister on Monday, he says he “broke my back, broke both ankles, I have seven broken ribs.” A GoFundMe has been set up for his medical expenses. No further information on the other person involved in the wreck has been released.

This is supposed to be the driver/owner.

Brakes cooled from the long straight.
Initial bite on cold brakes, pad knock back and some brake pull?

Miracle!

I would have thought the ABS would have taken care of the brakes, but I'm sure that at extreme speeds and in less than ideal circumstances anything can happen.

Did you see that video, it cartwheeled… holy crap, both lucky to be alive.

I would definitely want the top up for a top speed run. I'd want the aero benefit, and potentially, the top might help protect your arms some in the event of an issue. But in a violent multiple axis roll like the cab went through, I'm not sure if the top would have helped or hurt.

The owners' manual on my Boxster S states a "do not exceed" speed for when the top is up. The car is apparently only safe at its maximum speed with the top down. I would guess the rag top just flutters too much at speed, and/or disrupts the airflow over the car in a destabilizing manner. Not sure if that is true with 911 cabs, but it is a thing with Boxsters.

Good to know. It's been years since I read the manual and I'd forgotten that bit. Glad I'm running the hard top, I guess.

The right way to go about this kind of stuff, and the right kind of car in which to do it:

They’re both alive? Amazing.

My sentiments exactly. This car has actually crashed on a measured mile run, the owner survived and the car was rebuilt and runs again.

I've been transposing in my head what happened at this event with the launch of the ZR1 that took place all this week. Videos of the engineers and the writers from the motoring press giddily showing off the speed capabilities of the new car and then seeing the footage of how quickly many lives were changed when something goes wrong - and the images of the Porsche driver and his passenger wearing only helmets as protection.

Big Red basically a Camaro body wrapped around a tube chassis car.
Professionally run operation.

I felt safer' with a full Autopower roll cage in my 911.
Here is an Autopower customer car years ago.
180/190mph crash and the driver had minor injuries.
I would not take that ride with only helmets in a convertible.

Yikes. Gotta wonder if that would have happened had they been running on pavement.

I've seen similar at Bonneville. I wonder if the low traction surface has anything to do with it.

That's the whole nutshell right there.

El Mirage is a fine silt lake bed, never heard the cause of the accident.
Perhaps rolling/crashing on dirt or salt is more survivable than on asphalt.
Lake track has no elevation changes, no rocks, no trees, no walls.
