question on Cayman speakers?

It seems that I may have a blown door speaker. Took a friend to pick up his car today and he turned the music up a bit and realized that he had to turn the volume knob a lot more then his car just to hear the same loudness only to my surprise that door speaker no longer producing sound. Off to search for a new speaker. I am confuse, like anything else nowdays, a ton of reading and everyone has an opinion on the best way is to just mount a light bulb. It calls for 5.5" but it seems a 6.5 will also fit. Then there's the fooking 4" speaker and I can't seem to buy unless I fork over 400 bucks. I read on about the difficult of getting the tweeter out. Is Porsche the only car company that make these thing do difficult to get in and out. WTF is the odd size tweeters? some say there's a center dash other say they are on both side of the dash. Any of you taken these thing out? I do not have the Boss system and I believe it has the premium sound package. 09 Cayman S. Where to look for concrete info? Been looking at Crutchfield there's so many brands. don't need to pay 600 bucks for a set but 300? Should be good enough?

I bought replacements for my non-Bose 987.1 off ebay for about $30. Lots of racers strip their cars down and have the interior parts. Ten minute job to swap them out. The non-Bose still has no bass, so they sound tinny even if you have good speakers.

Crutchfield is a solid resource for car audio.

Provide your specific car and audio configuration and you get a list of speaker options. They indicate if the option fits your vehicle or if modification is required. They also sell speaker mounting adapters and wiring harness adapters.

I just used them for front door and dash speakers for the wife’s 2018 Crosstrek. Got the Audiofrog G60 component set with 6” midrange for the door. The factory location is 6” x 9” so Crutchfield provided the adapter.

I've got the standard speakers, but I also have an aftermarket head unit (10yo Pioneer) and amp. I get pretty good bass out of the standard speakers. It's the system that is less than optimal (at least with the standard system).

If you want upgrades, the man to talk to is Rod Birch from Car Audio Innovations. https://www.caraudioinnovations.com/ He's been doing stereos (and specializing in Porsches) for at least 25 years. He used to be very action on Rennlist back when it was via email and run by the guy, John Dunkle, I think.

The usual issue that comes up with speakers is that the foam disintegrates and they start to rattle. I've had that happen to both large door speakers, and now the pass' mid-range speaker is rattling.

Really, the head unit made that much difference? I often wonder why car mfg, especially high end cars co. do not put a betting sounding systems in their cars whereas a cheap 150.00 Pioneer head unit is head and shoulders above the stock unit for a fraction of the cost? I have the double din Pioneer units in both my diesel truck and 4 runner. They are great and simple to use. I am one of those guys that wouldn't replace anything unless it isn't working. The both both went out within a year of each other so I was glad I replaced them. I will check out Rod, thanks.

I spent hours in Crutchfield only to have them tell me that I only need a component, woofer and a tweeter. Nothing about the 4" mid range speaker in my door. I was hoping to get them all replaced and not just those two.

Sorry to hear their support was unsatisfactory.

A new head unit can have more power and a better dac than factory units. Hence the improvement.

Crutchfield was great when I bought new speakers for my kid's 4 runner. Those speakers were completely gone by the time we bought the vehicle. They were perfect fit with an adapter.

I gotta look into those speakers more for the Cayman

I'm not likely to ever buy a new Porsche, but I would love to hear/own one with the "Burmester" sound system.

I was shocked at how good things sounded with the new head unit and amp. The head unit (double din touch screen) includes a thing where you connect a microphone, and then get out of the car, the stereo then plays reference sounds listening to the input from the microphone and adjusts various settings. You can then tweak the settings (which I did). That setup and tweaking made a huge difference.

Yeah, I have done similar for my car when the door woofers went bad. I ended up replacing them with Porsche OEM speakers. They sound good for $95/ea and were a quick and easy bolt-in replacement. I'm sure that I could get some amazing aftermarket speakers, but then I'd have to deal with rigging the installation.

Rod Birch @ CAI sells a speaker package and adapters, but they are Focals or something like that, and spendy.

They do put in premium systems. Levinson, ELS, B&O, Harmon Kardon, Burmester, and even the Bose systems in Mazda and Honda sound fantastic. They will play as loud as you can stand and stay clean and clear.

Why not pull the panel and confirm the speaker wire didn’t simply come disconnected?

If you're happy with the size I'd be highly inclined to find a stock replacement, used off ebay.
Pennies on the dollar, plug in and go.

Factory stereos these days are pretty specific to impedance, size and tuning. Throwing aftermarket speakers to fill holes with a 3-way front factory setup isn't really going to make things better. Factory amp just isn't set up to use a 2 way replacement speaker. I wouldn't be too hot on modifying to fit aftermarkets unless you know someone who has done it before

I do not have the Bose system but their premium sound package. It has the speakers in the back, two in the door and tweeter in the dash. Do you know if the amp only sent base signals into those large door speakers or is it full range? I am planning to replace those 61/2" speakers with two way separates and eliminate (unplug) the 4" mid range speaker in the door. Rrmoved panel this morning. Foam is torn.

I thought it was full range, but I don't know for sure.

Not sure about the non-Bose system, the door speakers are mid and woofer, so I wouldn't assume the woofers would be full range but I am not familiar enough with that system.
You could always plug the two way (with crossover) in and see how it sounds.

I ended up with a pair or 6.5" two way and a under seat 8" sub woofer that was recommended by the tech I spoke at Crutchfield. It arrived yesterday. I am going to tear into it when I have a bit of time. Going on a week road trip with my boys in a couple days now that he has his dr lic.

Tech asked if I listen to music loud and the the type of music I listen to. Since I don't crank it up like I use to at 18, there's no base coming of those speakers and it will sound like a transistor radio from the 70s, the sub will help tremendously. We shall see. Now I need to sneak a power wire through the firewall from the battery. Can't seem to see an opening or grommet. The beauty of this sub is that it will receive speaker signal as a remote turn on so I no longer have to get to the back of the radio or a fuse that's hooked up to the ignition. I have to figure how to get the speaker wire to the amp. Maybe the easy way is to splice it off one of the speaker in the back by the shock tower. That's a lot of stuff to take out just to get at those speaker wires. Suggestions?

Thanks fo0r all the pics on your other thread. I am so fearful of taking the rear plastic covers off around the speakers. Everytime I try something like that without step by step videos off utube, I always break something or pull on something that only require it to slip forward to get it off the car. Hate it. I am racking my brain on how to get speaker signal from any of the speakers to the sub. It just need any speaker output to turn on the amp and provide base signal. Thoughts? Since the sub will be sitting under passenger seat, naturally that would be pulled from the rear speakers?
