On the news this morning they said a registration/licensing fee of about $160 per year should go up to around $490. But that's OK. All of us living in California are so sore from being screwed every way possible, we will never notice. Just another reason to live here.

It was about 0.7% of cars declared value. Now its about 2.1%. So if you told the DMV that you paid $10,000 for your car, then your fee will go from about $70 to about $210 the next time your renew your registration. On an 84 Targa, can you tell them that its only worth a couple of hundred dollars. Probably not if you recently bought the car and showed them a Bill of Sale for more.

Leno mentioned this in his monologue Monday saying "It's going to raise, like, a billion dollars...and that's just from me!"
A humorous reference to his huge car collection.

Best thing you guys can do is recall Gray-out Davis. Then the next time you can vote, ditch your liberal idiots in the legislature.

Hey we got an ocean over here on the east cost. No earth quakes as well. We are missing that nice stretch of road called the pacific coast highway but there has to be some trade offs.
Glad I don't live there.

This does not go into affect until Semptember of this year. So if you have already paid this year it wont hit you until next year. If I recall they reduced that same fee 3 years ago and now are repealling it do to the 40billion dollar debt. They had a provision that would allow them to do this. There are a few who are taking it to the courts as illegal, but we shall see how that plays out.

It's illegal if the increase is deemed a "TAX" ... if they label it as a DMV "FEE", then it's all fine and dandy according to the law. Either way it's still a three letter word.

I think that the lowering of the registration fees (5 years ago)? Was purposfully made so they could revoke it when they wanted to. Now they want to. You Californians may remember how for the first couple years after they cut the tax to 1/3 that you got a rebate check in the mail after you paid the full amount. Then they made it so you just don't pay the extra 2/3. But I think technically they never lowered the tax, they just refunded 2/3 to us so they are really just stopping refunding it, and not raising the tax. Still sucks though!

As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation, eventually. East coasters beware. But, not to frett. A ballot initiative is, or will be circulated to reduce it to $1. The Lawsuite was files 30 mins. after enactment by the State Controller's office. It was an administrative move, not a law. But the effect is the same. 3X last year. Thank your liberal political scumbags in Sacremento.
On a new $100,000 (Cayene) car that's $2100 first year. No big deal for them I guess...On my lowly '77 it goes from $51 to over $150 next year. We've been bent over and have taken it up the wazoo for so long we can't even straighted up anymore. |

These new fees are Gray Davis' way to bail out California from (his) electric energy debacle of 2001, that has just about bankrupt the state of Calif.
Impeach Davis now. http://www.impeachgraydavis.com/ |

31 attempts and no successes. I think we are going to make history here.
And when it's over, if you can believe this, we will have the "TERMINATOR" as the next governor. Hmmmmm. |
