Helene heading towards florida. Battened down the hatches, shouldn't be as bad as Ian.... should find out tomorrow.

stevej37 09-25-2024 10:35 AM

I had a plane ticket for tomorrow to SRQ for a week stay on Siesta Key.
I cancelled it yesterday. Doesn't look good.

Dixie 09-25-2024 11:55 AM

I'm as ready as I'm going to get.

Latest forecast for Helene sounds bad. Cat 4 at landfall, larger (diameter) than Katrina.

KFC911 09-26-2024 01:03 AM

Hurricane flooding .... sucks...

You folks in the mountains of NC/TN/GA .... this one is gonna be deadly for some.

Be safe!

rfuerst911sc 09-26-2024 01:49 AM

Here in Dahlonega Georgia the local news this morning states we will get 6 - 12 inches of rain with 15 " in some areas ! We have battened down the hatches and as ready as we can be . I have 600 gallons of propane to feed our 20kw generator . Our home is in the mountains so we won't get flooding at the house but roads could be an issue . Low level areas are screwed .

It started raining here yesterday we got over an inch of rain yesterday . It rained most of the night and is raining now . Unfortunately I think the rainfall estimates are accurate and some folks are heading for devastation at their homes . I hope no loss of life .

rfuerst911sc 09-26-2024 02:12 AM

Over 6000 without power near Atlanta and the storm really hasn't hit yet . Local news just reported 18000 linemen are standing ready to be deployed as needed .

KFC911 09-26-2024 02:21 AM

I live in the hilly "Piedmont" area ... this one is going just west of us, with just some more rain.... but we are already flodding :(.

Low areas & the mtns.... too many people and the H2O will turn wicked .... FAST.

A few inches in an hour ... that's all it takes here.

Hunker down....

edited: I got 2.5" yesterday morning .... similar the night before.

... I need to PM Noah930 :D

stevej37 09-26-2024 03:18 AM

The NHC warned that "a catastrophic and deadly storm surge is likely along portions of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high as 20 feet above ground level, along with destructive waves.''

greglepore 09-26-2024 04:01 AM

Along eastern Blue Ridge-we got 2 inches last night on top of several inches over the last week. Prediction is another 2 today ahead of the storm. The main rain should go west of us, but there's already stream and river flooding here. The folks in the mountains? Might be the worst since Camille.
With the ground this saturated trees are going to come down, widespread power outages.
Be safe all. Stock up on generator oil and bourbon.

IROC 09-26-2024 04:04 AM

As of yesterday evening we've gotten 3.5" already and it's not even here yet. We got probably another inch overnight and it is supposed to rain all day today and tomorrow. Local radio said some areas could receive 10" of rain just tomorrow. Some parts of the Smokies are closed already (or are planning to close) due to high winds.

rfuerst911sc 09-26-2024 05:21 AM

The predicted winds will be knocking down a lot of trees . Saturated soil just can't hold the root system of large trees . I wish everyone the best .

RNajarian 09-26-2024 05:23 AM

Stay safe everyone in harms way. We’re praying for you.

rfuerst911sc 09-26-2024 05:53 AM

It is calm at the moment but the lights have been flickering . Not enough to trigger the generator but it's just a matter of time .

p911dad 09-26-2024 06:49 AM

Getting interesting around here, just had a little tornado reported near the Charlotte airport which will raise the excitement level. it was heading off to the west instead of the usual easterly track. This is the third tropical system we have had so far since the beginning of August, which is not our normal late summer pattern.

It was fine at 7 am ....

Tobra 09-26-2024 12:11 PM

Hope y'all have your chainsaws ready for the downed trees

Sooner or later 09-26-2024 12:13 PM

Be safe, all.

Dixie 09-26-2024 12:48 PM

I just lost power, ugh. The good news is the river is still in it's banks.

The yellow lifeguard stand won't be there much longer.

Chocaholic 09-26-2024 01:21 PM

We're still in Fairhope, AL (eastern shore of Mobile Bay). Last three days the forecasting has been dire. Get ready to evacuate, yada, yada, yada. Welp...so far not a drop of rain and none in the forecast as of this afternoon.

We've been actively trying to move to NE GA or SC near Clemson with no luck finding a house. About now, I'm glad!

Stay safe all...especially in Dahlonega!

MBAtarga 09-26-2024 01:31 PM

We're in metro ATL and lost power about 20 times last evening. Most were just flickers off then back on (but enough to reset the modem/router which takes 10 minutes to recover), but a couple lasted 10 or 20 minutes.

rfuerst911sc 09-26-2024 01:33 PM

Volume of rain has picked up in the last 30 minutes . So far minimal wind but we expect that to increase . Looks like if we survive to about noon tomorrow we will have withstood the worst . That assumes the storm stays on the projected path . I am hoping not to hear the generator start tonight .

Low tide when storm arrives, I think? that is good

rfuerst911sc 09-26-2024 03:29 PM

The rain is really coming down now , still very little wind . Power still on . Hoping for a better tomorrow .

pwd72s 09-26-2024 03:34 PM

Stay safe, folks...

stevej37 09-26-2024 03:48 PM

More than 200K without power already....and it hasn't hit ground yet.

jyl 09-26-2024 03:54 PM

Cat 4 now, looks headed for Talahasse then Atlanta.

CurtEgerer 09-26-2024 04:23 PM

Looks like landfall about 11PM tonight. Just some gusty winds and light rain here in the Sebring area. Mostly sunny today actually.

We are not in the cone anymore here in Opelika, Alabama. I work at the Kia plant in West Point, Georgia, and we shut it down tonight at 6:30. Right now, I am only seeing some rain. Hope everyone stays safe. It's going to be a really strong storm even when it gets into mid Georgia.

I've been watching these guys. I'm in Opelika, Alabama, and we are not in the cone anymore. It has only been raining off and on here. I work at the Kia plant in West Point, Georgia, and we shut the plant down at 6:30 tonight in anticipation of this hurricane. I hope everyone stays safe.

I have an app that has real time conditions on the globe. It showed over 9m waves in the gulf. Take care everyone in the path.

Dixie 09-26-2024 07:34 PM

I'm about two inches away from water in my house, and high tide cresting is an hour away. Most of my neighbors are underwater,, ugh!

Bill Douglas 09-26-2024 07:42 PM

It's been raining here but NOTHING like what you guys are getting. Good luck guys and in particular Dixie. That water is too close

jyl 09-26-2024 07:47 PM

Oh no, hang in there Dixie!

Dixie 09-26-2024 07:59 PM

I think it's the metal awnings. They're the reason the wind wips about outside yet barely whispers through my house. Oh, what I would give for a fan. Not that a fan would do any good. The electricity is out. A hurricane has seen to that.
That's not the only issue I face. The river is inches from my door. The tide won't peak for an hour, and it's raining.

Given the situation, the best I can do is lay naked on the floor and sweat. It's late. I want too sleep, but it's too hot. Instead I just lay there, miserable as Satan's house cat.

My phone rings. It's Tony, the retired doctor I've been out with a few times. "Hey babe. You should come over. I have a generator. The AC and TV are on." It sounds like heaven, but heaven probably comes with strings. Strings that are a bit of a problem. See, I like Tony. I'd like us to become a couple, and not just a one night stand.

So I lie on the floor sweating. I swat at mosquitoes. The wind blows. Debris crash against my house. The river continues to rise. I stare into the dark and I wonder....
What kind of fool am I?
