if you drive down my road after dark
you are lost, or mad at me....
considering a homemade spike stipe system that will take a minute to roll out and roll up before I drive the road out. Thinking about using those nails that have the 1" or so square bases near the dull end. Pushing them through an old off-road recovery strap and lay it in or out depending on if I was the one coming or going. The upside is if they stick in the tires the strap will wrap around the axle. How can I make this better? |
Huh? Rough neighborhood?
|
Assume the spikes work. You have now reduced the ability of some very mad person to leave your location. Consider: My wife's family has a VERY nice property in a low rent town and we have never had any issues. Why? There is one road in and it has several homes on the road. It is far too risky to try stupid stuff with only one exit. So nothing happens. My advice, figure out how to engineer the goof balls from coming near you without increasing the antagonism.
|
A metal gate, like used on forestry roads. Takes less time to swing the gate open than to roll up your spiky mat.
|
Why not put some extremely bright spotlights 15-20 feet up a pole (or poles) out somewhere near the road that come on by motion detector with a game camera on the same pole that will capture vehicle and license plate? Might have to experiment with where you mount the camera on the pole or poles.
Just doing bright lights alone might be enough to discourage trespassers. |
I thought you lived next to Hatfield.... or was it McCoy?
A long private drive/road ... I would do what JYL said. I don't have "say so" on the long private rd/drive (my last name is on the state printed sign tho'), but an unbelievable amount of cars/trucks with no bidness being there .... are :(. Gate :) .... and a trail cam monitoring it. |
Get an ED 209.
|
this has far better chance of hurting someone you dont intend than protecting you from someone else.
and your lawyer will pull his/her hair out when they have to defend it in court. no one is coming for you and your stuff. |
Don"t do it halfway.
Removable land mines. |
Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I would think this would be considered the same as a booby-trap. Probably illegal in California. Go with the gate but motorize it to open and close it remotely. |
I thought you had a big light?

That's not a light. THIS is a LIGHT! https://www.victorysearchlights.com/mylight.jpg |
time to move - if i gotta lay out spikestrips to get a good night's sleep.
what are you gonna do with the stranded "culprits" in your driveway? lemme guess? shoot 'em? :) |
^^ You've taken away the flee option. Now it's just fight.
|
I was so freaking sick of getting our plumbing stolen, and vandalized at the rentals, that I did , indeed, make boards with nails sticking ouf of them, and I would leave them under the accessible first floor windows when we would leave at the end of the weekend.
Never snared anybody , but I dreamt about it . |
The "friendly" way to do this is to put up a gate with a prominent "no trespassing" sign on it. Your proposal is just asking for trouble. If I were lost out in rural America, pulled into a driveway or private road to turn around and encountered your "solution", it would turn into a very, very bad day for you. Think "lawyers guns and money"... Not necessarily in that order.

Like CP and Jeff mentioned, you will be at fault...get a gate. |

Seems like overkill .... and perfect :D A Gate or a Gator ... yer call! |
This may work for you. It contains a shotshell primer. So sounds a bit like a .22 going off next to your ear. And legal. You could set it up inside a tool box or attach it to a shed door that you never use yourself.

On a lighter note, my brother up in Oreo-Gone lives out in the boondocks and has the same sort of situation. He did the gate approach and blocked of each side of it with some donated boulders to prevent drive around technique. Had to coordinate with the fire, sheriff and game warden guys as far as getting proper master keyed set up so they could access in emergency.

Another thing is a driveway chime. It's movement and IR sensing. And does the ♪ ding dong ♪ inside your house. Gives you time to put your boots on.
My one in the garage got a motorbike thief 18 months in jail LOL |
I have a mailbox chime that sounds and leaves an alert light on in the house if the mailman delivers.
Saves me from putting clothes on...only to find no mail. |
A long private road/driveway like some have just need a gate ... once entered .... no turn-arounds, etc. are typical.
There is no substitute! "Private" - .... that can't mean me .... evidently :( I went down one two weeks ago ... being nosey. Musta been a 3 mile round trip .... a dirt driveway in my youth. "Toady" used to live down there .... next to our family farm. Now one of his relatives does.... I'd just tell them I was an "xxxxx" and we would have chatted .... didn't see a soul .... Waved at relatives on the way out .... they don't know my white F150... but they wuz watching .... country neighbors ;). I waved bigly.... Needs a gate :) |

Florida. Yes, I thought that too.

Yours would be a stupidly dangerous solution to what is likely a perceived problem
If I drive down your road after dark, for whatever reason might find me there, and have my tires punctured by your poorly-considered diy spike strip, you should count yourself among the fortunate if I don't then complete a trip to your place on foot. _ |

Got a setup of 3 that make 3 different tones so i can tell how far in a vehicle/person has gotten past the NO TREPASSING signs. Animals set them off regularly after dark. My buddy has a sign that says THERE IS NOTHING ON THIS PROPERTY WORTH YOUR LIFE..... Good points made here. |
|
Maybe a job for pop up Ninjas
|
What excuses have you heard from the people who trespassed? Just wondering.

Spike strips use hollow spikes to let the air out of the tire slowly. If you use regular nails there is a good chance the air might not leave the tire and would not have the effect you are looking for and as mentioned might be a problem if someone gets injured. Why not some sort of beam alarm that you can place on each side of the road that when broken sets off an alert on your phone. You van set it a little higher to avoid small animals setting it off? Or a guard tower with an armed guard might work as well

Can I ask why you think you need this?
