Luft is really well done this year

Got back couple hours ago and it is tastefully done at Universal Studios. Cars were parked between the sets in alleys and under awnings like if someone was driving them. Some were in Western settings or the old west some were in the streets of NYC. I didn't get to go to the last couple due to ticket issues but was turned around by the big mouth idiot at the gate. Anyone go?

Universal Studios is an excellent backdrop for our P-cars and provided for stunning photography but honestly I found Luft10 to be overall very underwhelming. Compared to the Air/Water show in Newport, this was significantly less fun and less appealing. I think the main reason is that the organizers of Luftgekult forgot what the most important part of this entire event is. Luftgekult is not actually about the cars. It’s about the people who love these cars and spend tons of energy and time to make these cars the way we want and keep them roadworthy for decades longer than typical cars would ever endure. Due to the lack of space at Universal Studios, 60% of cars submitted for the event were rejected. Now maybe it’s a matter of sour grapes for me since I was one of the rejected cars, but as I walked through the show I saw so many vehicles that were not at all well prepped vehicles, some with patina (aka rust and dents) that looked terrible and honestly pissed me off to think someone on a selection committee could think a piece of junk like this could somehow be a better car to display at this event than my car which I’ve spent years turning into an absolutely stunning daily driver sports car. I’m sure I’m not alone when I felt this way as the parking lot was jammed packed with stunning air cooled beauties that would put many of the show cars to shame. If I pay $200+ for a car show plus drive 3hrs from home and pay for a hotel, I want to see nicer cars than my own, not garbage. Anyway just my two cents FWIW, maybe I’m being unreasonable..I dunno…just was not a fun show. On a more positive note here are a few examples of the very nice cars I saw there. And of course the Singers and Gunther Werks were absolutely stunning.

It is not what the first Luft was that's for sure. The crowd had changed. The attitude had changed, jsut like Rennsport. As far as the patina cars go, they have to satisfy the hipsters therefore must be cool to have that rusted POS there. The rusted cars isnt my cut of tea neither. Patrick long is no dummy, go after the money. The air cool enthusiast of the old days had come and gone. The hard core group I knew when I was 30 is still around but that boat had sailed sadly and most of them are well into their mid 60 or older. How much can they keep this going and how much money are they going to throw into their flat motors? I took the shuttle from the parking lot with my kid (first time at Car show and we had a grand old time). One the way back, I met this 45 -50 year women, skinny, heels and a tight silver shinny dress like if she was a singer on stage (like the rusty car, not my cup of tea) and we talked a little about the car show. She told me this was her first Porsche show ever and she's been a Porsche enthusiast since she bought her Porsche. Me: Oh, what kinda Porshee do you have? A Panamera and she was hoping to see more modern Porshee instead of cars that are 30-40 years old. Must have missed the Luft part? Well, that will be the crowd for Air-cool cars from now. Sad. Lots of hipsters taking pictures wearing their Porsche design glasses, jackets and all the things Ferrari owner seem to do to promote their brand.

I had a great time. Stopped to chat with Wayne and saw his 962 and share stories about his solar car from MIT. That was fun.

I didn't care to go to the previous Luft Events because the one before that, I was told by a couple of folks at the counter that this event was for owners normally and that I should buy ticket long before the event. I just happen to be checking on my rental and this was around the corner. It has become too exclusive. I spoke to a friend yesterday and he said the same thing, there's no need to pay 100 bucks to go see someone's else's car. I have to say, seeing all the IROC cars there was cool. See you at the next Rennsport

For sure! Will definitely be at Rennsport and also Monterey car week. I don’t however think I’ll be going out of my way for the next Luft however. Not worth the effort.

I was planning on going because I heard good things about the last one at Universal and the hundred dollars is no big deal in this day and age. What killed it for me is that I wanted to take a friend who was flying in from Europe yesterday and it was a question mark whether he would want to go with jet lag, etc.

When I went to buy the tickets, I found that they needed a name attached to each one and they were non-transferable. IOW, if my friend could not make it, I could not sell or give that other ticket away. As it turned out, he was a “no” due to the reasons above.

Wtf is that all about? It’s not exactly like a State Dinner at the WH, it’s a bunch of old cars parked outside on a studio backlot. Who gives a schit? That killed it for me along with the general fetishized nature of old Porsches these days. Not exactly a gear head crowd. It would have been nice to see a few Pelicans and it was a 15 minute drive away but I just couldn’t muster the enthusiasm. I’ve seen them all, owned and driven quite a few and been to better events, like previous Lufts and car week in Monterey, which is completely off the chain.

The Porsche scene ain’t what it used to be but then again, what is?

I’ll bet they didn’t sell out the event like previous years, tickets seemed to be available when I checked the day before. They are probably doing some recalibrating if they’re smart…the last one at Uni was sold out well in advance and everyone I knew went. Not talking car or Porsche people necessarily, either. It was considered an art event.

Agree. The nontransferable tickets rule is complete BS. Seems very unnecessary.

I understand the cost to rent the place and the string one needed to pull off to get that venue, not easy thus the cost of ticket was part of it. Sure it was nicely done and IMO the best in all the luft events I have been.
