Wanted to order from our host, but shipping is a killer these days

I am preparing for my first oil change. I queued up my cart at Pelican with an oil filter with gasket/o-ring, oil plug with washer, and hazet oil filter wrench. Then I went to check out, and the cheapest shipping was more than 25% of the cost of the stuff that I wanted to order. I ended up getting the drain plug from PP. It made me sad.

I was shocked at how small the oil filter for the boxster is. I expected it to be bigger, no idea why.

I also don't have good storage for a bunch of extra stuff to be laying around.

I must confess, I ordered about 8 oil filters once, to get the free shipping.

I bought a bunch of random stuff that I will use, eventually.

I need to do window switches on the 911. Got the door panel clips, 914 uses the same ones anyway, so now I care a lot less if I break a couple. Couple oil filters and washers, air filter, valve cover stuff, loght blubs et voila, free shipping. I am close, so it does not take long in a truck

Sounds to me like a construction project is in order. "Honey! I need to build a garage to store my oil and filters"

Shipping on everything is stupid these days. I just ordered a oil pressure dual-pole sender for my 3.6, it weighs a couple ounces and it was shipped in a small, say 5" square box with packing peanuts inside. $35 shipping from about 165 miles away!

I'd have been fine if they had the oil that I wanted (Driven DT40), but they don't carry it. I have been known to purchase extra stuff to get free shipping, but didn't want to do that this time, so instead of ordering $60 worth of stuff, I ordered $7 worth of stuff.

And the crazy bit is that if they put the small box inside a USPS padded priority flat rate envelope, the shipping would have been $8.

Yeah, there is a garage, but it's kind of like a barn. It's got a concrete pad and water tight roof, but the walls do not keep out critters. Lots of mud daubers creating mud huts for babies, spiders. I find bird nests and snake skins. I also find acorns and pecans that have been nibbled on by various critters. It gets HOT and cold humidity/fog gets inside and makes anything exposed rusty.

Yeah, but while everyone's moaning about the now made in China oil filters from Mahle, I've still got enough of the Austrian ones for another round of oil changes in my cars.

Then I'll be complaining, too!

Ugh, so I just bought a made in China filter? Crap!

< edit > SWEET! I must have gotten some NOS. The box says "Made in Austria".

Maybe I should order 9-10 more (to get free shipping).

I may or may not know of a Canadian who lived close to the border, had items delivered to the USA, then went and picked them up from his PO box address without declaring them.

I think the Mann filters are still from Europe

I'm trying to sell off some of the Porsche and VW parts I've accumulated over the years. A lot of potential buyers back off when they see the cost of shipping.

Say whaaaa? Mahle is now made in China? fug me . One thing I have learned (just learned again this week the hard way......again..... ) is that, name brands , and name brand vendors mean jack. The market is flooded with fake, or inferior parts , all coming in the same familiar boxes that we have all come to know and trust all our lives .
Maybe Ill just by a freakin KIA now .

Don't do it, no matter what HobieMarty says!

I will not be purchasing a Kia or Hyundai any time soon, at least, i have no plans to (afraid to say "never" since that almost makes it certain that you'll be wrong).

That said, I've been favorably impressed with the direction that they've gone in terms of appearance and aesthetics of their vehicles recently. I'm still not going to buy one, but they look much better than they used to, and better than a lot of other stuff out there.

I wanted to buy some parts here last week, but PP doesn't show anything for any Audi made after 2020. I had to order everything piecemeal, but Amazon Prime is worth every penny of its annual fee.
