Say you forgot to put the tailgate up on your pickup and one of your gold bars falls out, the gold is lost to you, but it still exists and someone might find it. If you lose your key or your hard drive is lost or destroyed, does the bitcoin simply cease to exist, or does it still exist somewhere waiting for someone to take possession of it?

I'm no expert, but I think the BC is just gone forever.

Happened to a coworker of mine in 2018-ish when Bitcoin was just starting to be a thing. He forgot his password and lost about $10k. That’s probably way more money today.
