Oops....I accidentally lost a half billion dollars

Maybe this was brought up on here earlier...I missed it if so.
Nobody wants to help him out to recover it from the landfill. :)

Data mining in a landfill..... Dumpster diving has reached an all time high.

stevej37 10-15-2024 10:25 AM

I can't figure out why I don't feel sorry for him. :D

stevej37 10-15-2024 10:48 AM

I would think the hard drive would be corrupted after being compacted and then laying in a landfill for years.

pete3799 10-15-2024 10:49 AM

Color me stupid but isn't there some other way to prove you own 8000 bit coins?

stevej37 10-15-2024 10:52 AM

^^^ If there isn't....that's a big argument for not owning any.

"Wales-based software engineer...." wasn't smart enough to put his crypto key on a secured thumb drive? Who randomly puts hdds into the bin while cleaning their office? Dude deserves the $500 mln education.

I agree. I don't have any bitcoins, but I have files safely backed up on my computer from the 80s.

KFC911 10-15-2024 11:14 AM

Hmmm.... he needed to say it was "accident" ... as opposed to being on a porpoise :D

If you lose your key (password) it's game over. There is zero way to recover your coins. One of a zillion reasons why I'd never own any.

stevej37 10-15-2024 01:10 PM

Bitcoin is just too much of a gamble I think. I wouldn't dare put much into it...I'm too old and Dutch to try it.
Some have done ok....some have lost.

stevej37 11-28-2024 04:41 PM

Ex-girlfriend threw it away....it's gone.

Data loss! ... I'd bet a whole bunch of people world wide have lost crypto in the same way.

(Do you remember that video from years ago of a guy screaming to tech support after they deleted all of his data on his laptop?)

And it's the same as lighting cash on fire. There's just no way to recover what was yours.

And I'm Scottish. Did you know copper wire was invented by a Dutchman and a Scotsman arguing over a penny.

stevej37 02-14-2025 02:11 PM

New solution to his problem...buy the landfill. :)

Thumb drives didn’t exist back then…

If someone loses their key and the BC it allows access to, does someone somewhere gain from it?
Say you forgot to put the tailgate up on your pickup and one of your gold bars falls out, the gold is lost to you, but it still exists and someone might find it. If you lose your key or your hard drive is lost or destroyed, does the bitcoin simply cease to exist, or does it still exist somewhere waiting for someone to take possession of it?
