What have I done? - Landcruiser FJ40

I had to scratch an itch. Hopefully it doesn't bite me in the rear end. We camp a fair bit at a lake about 75 miles from the house. We spent about a month there this summer. There are tons of off road opportunities in the area and in other accessible places. My son is also moving closer and has a modified Samuri he loves to get out in the woods and mountains in.

So, I brought home a 77 FJ40 Landcruiser. It needs a few things, but the previous owner of 25 years did a pretty thorough resto 15 years back. There is diamond plate present but it was a choice the owner made after rust repair and paint. The paint is ok driver quality, which is fine for my usage. The interior is super clean and it came with a summer setup with half doors, a top and a tailgate.

I put in a new fuse block yesterday and fixed the wiper linkage. I’ve also had to modify the driver’s seat placement to accommodate my height and inseam.

Shopping for tires now and will do a full fluid service and it should be good to go. I didn’t want a big project so hopefully it doesn’t turn into one 🙂

Major score!! Hope you have many happy miles together.

BTW, you should never mix battery colors. ;)

That is so cool...perfect part of the world for the FJ.

I like the truck.
But have to wonder - why off road in something that clean and nice?
I’d want something I didn’t care about breaking. Or are you talking dirt trails?

This will be primarily forest service roads, etc. Not extreme wheeling or rock climbing, or whatever the guys that tip over call it.

little known fact. I bought a 1975 FJ40 about two years ago.

way rougher shape. I started working on it. parts coming in, parts stacking up. I think it gave me a panic attack. shuffling around a cramped garage and stuff.

a friend bought it off of me. it is embarrassing how short a duration I owned that thing. my wife will still to this day, SIDE-EYE me hard when we see one on the streets. she was PISSED

Buying a 47 year old British car is pretty brave. Hopefully as clean as your is, the Lucas electronics has been sorted after all the years.

It’s a Toyota :)

Awesome!!!! I have a few friends with them, and while mines a luxo barge compared to those I will never sell it.

Pisssed that you bought it or that you sold it?

Everyday for about a billionth of a second I think about selling it.

Nice FJ40. I had one years ago really recommend replacing the seats with some sport buckets, I installed a set out of a Pontiac Fiero, lol. I had mine for years and never had to replace anything on it.

Tishabet 10-19-2024 02:21 PM

Neat!

What's with the two battery setup... does the optima yellow top run the winch and compressor so you don't end up with a dead starter battery?

Crowbob 10-19-2024 02:48 PM

Yeah. It looks like the positive from the red top goes to the winch.

Usually a red top is the starter battery, yellow top for deep cycle. FWIW I own three vehicles with multiple batteries (one has 4!!) but my only 4x4 only uses the second as a "house battery" whereas this Landcruiser has more offroading goodies (winch etc) requiring amps.
