New scam underway

I've been selling off stuff on Facebook Marketing for a couple of years and only had 1 no-show until now.
I'm selling a little floor jack for $25. All of a sudden, people are contacting me about it and setting up a time to come get it. As soon as I send them my address, they disappear. Over the past 5 days the people who have responded to my ad and ghosted me are: Jose, Juan, Thomas, Xavier, Michael, Jarrid, Guy, Fredy, and Stephanie.

I see a pattern.

Damned if I know what good having my address is, but that seems to be what they want.

I got about a half dozen of these:

John XXXXXXXXXXX, [LAST NAME]
Is visiting XXXXXXXXXXXXX [MY ADDRESS] Ave a better way to contact if you don't take action
Have been here before?
[STREET VIEW PHOTO INSERTED]
I suggest you read this message carefully. Take a moment to chill, breathe, and analyze it thoroughly.
'Cause we're about to discuss a deal between you and me, and I ain't playing games. You do not
know anything about me whereas I know ALOT about you and right now, you are wondering how,
right?
Well, You've been a bit careless lately, scrolling through those filthy videos and venturing into the
darker corners of cyberspace. I actually placed a Spyware called "Pegasus" on a app you frequently
use. Pegasus is a spyware that is designed to be covertly and remotely installed on mobile phones
running iOS and Android. While you were busy watching those videos, your smartphone started
functioning as a RDP (Remote Control) which provided me with total accessibility to your device. I
can look at everything on your display, switch on your cam and mic, and you wouldn't even suspect
a thing. Oh, and I've got access to all your emails, contacts, and social media accounts too.
What have I done?
Been keeping tabs on your pathetic life for a while now. It's just your bad luck that I found your
misdemeanor. I gave in more days than I should have looking into your data. Extracted quite a bit of
juicy info from your system. and I've seen it all. Yeah, Yeah, I've got footage of you doing
embarrassing things in your house (nice setup, by the way). I then developed videos and screenshots
where on one side of the screen, there's whatever garbage you were playing, and on the other half,
it is you jerking off. With simply a click, I can send this video to every single of your contacts.
What can you do?
I feel your worry and confusion. Frankly, I want to wipe the slate clean, and let you continue with
your regular life and wipe your slate clean. I am going to present you two options. Either ignore this
notice (bad for you) or pay me a small fee. Let us explore these 2 options in details.
Option 1 is to turn a blind eye to my email. Let us see what will happen if you select this option. I
will send your video to all of your contacts. The video is lit, and I can't even fathom the humiliation
you'll endure when your colleagues, friends, and fam watch it. But hey, that's life, ain't it? Don't be
playing the victim here.
Other wise choice is to pay me, and be confidential about it. We’ll call this my “privacy charges”.
Lets see what will happen if you pick this option. Your filthy secret remains private. I will destroy all
the data and evidence once you send payment. You have to make the payment by Bitcoins only. Pay
attention, I'm telling you straight: 'We gotta make a deal'. I want you to know I'm coming at you with
good intentions. My word is my bond.
Amount to be paid: $19[XX]
My BTC Address: [XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX]
Or, (Here's your Bitcoin QR code, you can scan it): [NEVER SCAN QR CODE LINKS !!!]
Let me tell ya, it's peanuts for your tranquility.
Pay Attention: You now have one day in order to transfer the amount. (I have a special pixel in
this email, and at this moment I know that you've read this message). My system will catch that
Bitcoin payment and wipe out all the dirt I got on you. Don't even think about replying to this, it's
pointless. The email and wallet are custom-made for you, untraceable. I don't make mistakes, John.
If I catch that you've shared or discussed this email with someone else, the video will instantly start
getting sent to your contacts. And don't even think about turning off your phone or resetting it to
factory settings. It's pointless.
Honestly, those online tips about covering your camera aren't as useless as they seem.
Don't dwell on it. Take it as a little lesson and keep your guard up in the future.

All the Police Stations in my area have parking spots under camera that are dedicated to exchanging goods and money...any time, including weekends; lots of signage letting both parties now they are being surveilled.

A nice touch, but the real issue is much more complicated, unfortunately.

Never, ever let strangers from CL or anywhere else know where you live. Never. There is absolutely no upside to it and massive potential downside. CL provided you with an anonymous email address that hides your true one. Never give out your true email address, there is no legitimate reason to do this.

It’s a well setup site with fraud protections built in, unless you defeat them as you did. When I’m selling anything, I meet them down the street somewhere with room to park two vehicles next to each other. Anyone legit will appreciate your security measures because they would do the same thing. If they buck in any way, stop communication and block them. There is always another (legitimate) buyer.

Since I’m on a roll and others might read this in the future, when I sell a vehicle on CL, I do not list the VIN in the ad. I will provide it via text to anyone who asks. People asking for your VIN are looking to run a carfax or other VIN check. Anyone who asks you to click a link and run a check on it for them is a scammer, block them immediately. If someone asks for a photo of the title, they will get it with all personal info covered with a business card, (blank), not blurred out. Etc., etc… You need to use your gut as well but never get lazy with the protocols.

That scam has been around for a long time. I think I’ve seen it at last as long as 5-6 years ago.

I seem to meet Facebook and C-list buyers in parks, at night, usually away from any other traffic or people.

I'm usually selling them a telescope...and nerds are safe to be around.

I once dug up and 'gave away' a few dozen fresh Iris Plants for $5. My time. All packaged and neat. Worth a hundred bux in the store.

Dude took them all. Then hopped in his car and drove away without paying. SMH.

I have one rule when selling on Marketplace, I don't give out my address until the buyer and I have spoken. Anyone who doesn't like that rule, doesn't need to buy what I'm selling. My first message when asked "where can I come see it" is "Call me at ....."

Yeah, it does get complicated.

I've sold over $4000 worth of unneeded junk on CL and FB Marketing this summer, including a 16'x16' wooden deck, a 27 foot swimming pool, and a 112,000 BTU poll heater. Hard to meet behind a McDonald's dumpster with some stuff.

I don't know where I would be selling all this stuff if not for CL and FB Marketing.

Thankfully, for equipment and farm stuff there are auctions throughout the years that I sell stuff at...I rarely buy anything.

The best one is next month, the Amish Auction on Friendship Lane. Huge turnout, unbelievably well run...three auctioneers selling an eclectic mix of, frankly, everything.

Traffic jam on the way

Interesting however nobody gets my phone#. I can tell through responses if they are knowledgeable about the item.

In fact my ads typically say "first come first served, don't ask if it is still available, and your first message should include when you want to pick it up. I check their profile & ratings on FB before I respond. New profiles or no history don't get any of my info.

I'm selling a MacBook Pro on FB Marketplace. A few weeks ago a guy made an offer and I accepted, but said I'd not go a dime lower and was traveling, would be home in two days. He said all good. A few hours later his meds must have worn off and he sent me some weird message about how I had talked down to him and he wouldn't take it for free and just wanted to watch it sit unsold for a few mos. No prob. I ignored him. That fooker was able to leave me a one star feedback, even though we never did a transaction AND when I try to dispute the feedback, FB says that feature is unavailable, try back later. I hate everyone.
