Annoyed by Walmart check out

So today my wife and I had errands to run . One of the stops was at Walmart . I headed to auto to get windshield washer fluid . My wife headed to grocery section to get a few things . We said we would meet at the car .

I grabbed 5 gallons of fluid and headed to self checkout . I looked for signs saying " cash " or " card only " and saw none . So I picked a register , scanned my items and attempted to pay cash . You silly man .

I made eye contact with an employee and she came over and said card only . I said where does it say that ? She replies it doesn't . Turns out none of the self checkout registers take cash on this end . If you walk to the grocery end there are two self checkout registers that take cash .

Slightly annoyed I went to a manned register and paid cash . I told the elderly male cashier my situation about trying to pay cash . He said he hears it all the time . I joked with him and said it's still US currency isn't it ? We both laughed .

I went to the car and a few minutes later my wife arrived . She was flustered . I asked what's wrong ? She went through the exact same scenario at the grocery end self checkout . On a scale of 1 to 10 this probably is a 2 . Not earth shattering or life threatening but an annoyance . End of rant , thanks for letting me vent .

Yeah, I avoid going to Walmart if at all possible, I hate that place.

Ditto. Absolute last resort, especially for food items.

Not all walmarts are the same. I’ve seen ones that took cash on both sides. I take gander at the scanner to see if it has a cash acceptor or not….

PS walmart uses facial recognition and links your purchases to your credit card… Use cash whenever possible.

Right, the Walmart closest to me is very different from a Walmart in the middle of Houston or one of the big Houston suburbs.

JackDidley 10-24-2024 11:08 AM

I cant imagine using cash. Credit card pays me several hundred dollars a year for buying stuff I'd buy anyway.

Right? I have cash as a last resort but use credit for almost everything. Hell, even hot dog stands take card most of the time.

Any time I have to go to Wally for something I make it a point to buy some ammo. And pay for it all there in sporting goods. Ain't like I'm not gonna shoot the 22....

Sooner or later 10-24-2024 12:04 PM

I order on line, have them do the shopping, and they deliver to my car. No errors in over 4 years.

matthewb0051 10-24-2024 12:10 PM

I routinely have to explain to people that Walmart is not the right place to steal from, it is wired like a casino in Vegas.

"yeah, I know that now".

I have not set foot in WalMart in 35 years. I am afraid someone will take my picture for the Walmaartians web site!

I will stop paying cash when I am dead . Until then it's US legal tender .

I was self checking at Walmart once and a guy came up behind me reached over my shoulder and scanned something and said something like “I know what you’re up to!” I turned around and said “what the heck are you doing?” Turns out he was a employee standing by somewhere watching his phone and one of my items was a small tube of butane for a Wurth butane torch I have and he was notified and had to OK the purchase. I guess they’re afraid someone is going to huff it. Big brother watching.

All these registers have cash acceptor, they are not activated. So visually there is nothing for the consumer to notice .

VINMAN 10-24-2024 01:31 PM

I still pay with cash whenever possible.

I dont get the "Who pays with cash?" BS .
Like its some snobbery badge of honor that people wear, that they only pay with a card.

Oh. I’ve seen that at smaller town walmarts, at the end the of the day when they’re pulling cash. I’ve also seen check outs w/o cash acceptors.

Fun fact, i paid cash yesterday for a gallon of the blue bug juice. 3.68$

To me, it's not snobbery...just extraordinarily convenient to use card. It's extremely rare that I have cash on me. I play a cash poker game with a group of friends every month. When I win, the money just goes in my safe.

Arizona_928 10-24-2024 03:43 PM

Not to be snobby. But when you can’t spend the cash bc corporations won’t allow it…. Everyone remembers the coin shortage due to viruses and federal reserve not sending them out.

Radioactive 10-24-2024 04:07 PM

if you can't pay with cash, how are you supposed to launder money?

asking for a friend

Baz 10-24-2024 04:59 PM

I pay cash as much as possible. But I also use my two Discover cards every month, for stuff I can't pay cash for, which is a lot!

I shop at WM all the time and always use the self-checkout. Always on the grocery end and never had that problem, you mentioned, Rick. I'll have to see if the other self-checkout has any cash machines. Will report back. I need some more dryer sheets and canned beets, so will stop there tomorrow. :)

Life is SO hard! I had to walk a few extra steps to pay a certain way for my items that would be considered a luxury if I lived in a third world country. I hate a store that has fresh food and millions of items at my disposal nearly 24/7. Life is SO hard.

Not snobbery at all. Just makes sense to use the cards and get cash back. Also it is usually quicker getting checked out than cash.

Credit cards charge 2-5% off the local merchant overhead. Sometimes that can put them out of business. And then you don't have somewhere to go to.

You think that doesn't affect you?
Next year? Next decade?
That is a lot of 3%. +3%. +3%.+3%.+3%.+3%.+3%.+3%.+3%.+3%.

All I want is to skim a single dollar from every resident in the USA. $400M worth.

Daily is fine.

You dont think that 3% is factored into the selling price of goods anyway ?

cabmandone 10-25-2024 02:21 AM

Honestly I don't pay any attention when hitting the self checkout. I'm always using a card. Just bought a pumpkin roll, I think it's my fifth one so far... TO THE SELF CHECKOUT.

rfuerst911sc 10-25-2024 02:26 AM

It is odd that this policy seems to be store specific . We have two Walmarts near us . The one we shopped yesterday is in the same town as our bank . The other is in the town we live in and that Walmart takes cash at the self checkouts at either end .

stevej37 10-25-2024 03:27 AM

If a person has a Walmart credit card....the self check-outs can be used as ATM's. I had one and did that a lot after purchasing something. Just click on the amount you want and it spits it out. I pay the full balance each month...so why not?

A few years back, I walked up to a self serve machine and noticed cash laying in the return slot. I picked it up and it was a stack of twenty dollar bills...at least 15 or more. I was fanning them out and was trying to get the attention of the Walmart worker for that area, when a woman came running into the area straight toward me. She said "Oh thank God, it's still here" She took it and left the store. She was using it as an ATM also....but somehow forgot to pick up the cash.

gduke2010 10-25-2024 04:56 AM

My pet peeve is I usually, have a cart load of groceries while scanning the self checkout stops and says see cashier. I put my groceries back in the cart and move to a checkout with a checker.

Read about a woman who was busted because an item didn’t scan .Walmart called the cops. At Smiths I scanned my card and requested cash, walked to the car with my cart of groceries and realized I forgot my cash. When I walked back in the store an employee told me I needed to pay for my groceries. I forgot to hit pay after inn putting my PIN.

Rusty Heap 10-25-2024 05:14 AM

I was at a gas station in Hawaii filling up a Rental Car before returning it at the airport. Go inside and it's pandemonium. Their Debit Machine is down and can't take cards. People are FREAKING OUT SCREAMING that they can't buy a $1.50 pack of gum with their piece of plastic. I paid my cash and RAN.

zakthor 10-25-2024 05:17 AM

The current system of credit card rebates is bad and regressive. The card lets me get cash back on everything I buy, but only because there’s other people subsidizing my rebates by paying interest every month. And the fees to pay for my card use falls on everyone because store needs to make up the fees somehow.

Folks paying cash are subsidizing my flights to Europe, extended warranties, etc.

As for Walmart: I really only go there to buy motor oil but I find that the other customers are courteous and human, it’s a pretty relaxing place for me. I’ve found this to be true of every Walmart I’ve been to in several states. Most stores I visit these days the customers are rude and only have time for themselves - not a lot of empathy going around.

Problem I have at Walmart is their food is often expired but wow their oil is cheap.

Tim Hancock 10-25-2024 07:16 AM

Since changing jobs 12 years ago, I go to Walmart several times a week at lunch time. It is about the only place to shop in the town I work in. I used to avoid the self checkouts but now there is typically only maybe two cashier lanes staffed so I use the self checkout. We always pay our discover bill off monthly so I typically use it for most purchases for the cash back we get for using it. It is "free money". It would be stupid not to use it.

That said, I still carry cash and use it for making small purchases at convenient stores or occasional fast food at a drive thru. I just can't get my head around using my credit card to buy a candy bar or cup of coffee at a gas station.... showing my age I guess as most youngsters I work with don't carry any cash at all and pay for "everything" with a card or phone.

Still have not ventured into the paying with my phone deal.... Crazy how times have changed in regard to paying for stuff these days compared to when I was in highschool and college in the 80's.

If you read my post I clearly stated on a scale of 1 to 10 this was barely a 2 . No whining just stating what happened . To me and my wife at both ends of the check out.

As an American citizen yeah I have some heartburn that the nation's largest retailer makes it difficult to pay with cash . You know the green stuff that is US currency . Have a nice day .
