You can have all of the Black Plastic, Parkerized Rifles You Want...
... give me walnut, with blued or cased colored steel. Now this is a rifle.
I'll never aspire to one of these, but I do have the "poor man's" version in several configurations in the form of the Ruger #1. Left to right we have a Light Sporter in 6.5x55, a Tropical Rifle in .375 H&H Magnum, another Tropical Rifle in .458 Winchester Magnum, another Light Sporter in .30-'06, and a custom Varminter in .220 Swift with a 28" 1:12" twist Lilja barrel. ![]() Rifles like these are an absolute joy to hunt with. So light, so well balanced, and not nearly as slow to reload as some would assume. I wear a stretchy nylon cartridge holder on my left wrist, so when I push the trigger guard lever forward to open the action and eject the empty, my right hand is right there. I just grab the next one from my wrist band, stuff it in the chamber and close the action. The rifle never leaves my shoulder and my eye never leaves the sights. I would defy most to run their bolt actions as quickly.

agree blued steel and walnut is about as good as it can get. we even have walnut living room furniture because I'm such a fan.

Agreed. I far prefer a more traditional item with wood furniture to all of the tacticool black.

My problem with a rifle like that? $$$, and I'd be terrified of dinging or scratching the stock...well, that & I still prefer bolt action for hunting. Agree though...more of a traditionalst here. See no need to dump my old Ruger M-77 in 7mm Rem. Mag. The Parkwest "Alpine" looks nice to me...

I can appreciate and enjoy shooting all firearms - except lever actions, just never got into them to any degree or really care to. Which is weird, since I do like the underlever style rolling block like your Ruger #1/#3...
When it comes to nice wood and blue steel vs "black is beautiful" mindset, I am more than happy to split the difference. Since I can't afford a real G-series Belgian import FN-FAL I had one mocked up, using a German G1 kit built on a DCI receiver and using walnut hand guards from Ironwood Designs. Had to sell the rifle a while back but still have the walnut hand guards and walnut original G1 pistol grip. ![]()

I built a few black rifles with my sons but like looking at my Remington BDL shotguns and bolt action rifles. Old school I guess.
I remember lusting for the beautiful wood-stock Weatherby rifles advertisements you could get if you opened up a CD account as a kid. Back then the CD was as out of reach as the rifle… might as well have been for a million dollars. I don’t hear much about Weatherby’s these days. Are they still made?
