Did you or someone you know submit DNA to 23andme?

If anyone that you know submitted DNA to 23andme, then you may want to follow the instructions to direct them to delete your data in the following link
https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004944654-What-s-In-Your-Account-Settings

Because if they get sold, then who knows what could happen to the customer DNA data.

There was an internet post about submitting pet lizard blood and getting a positive ME ethnic match.
(actually many different animals from different people were entered with the same result))
Spoke with a educated Asian who got the same .

I would suspect the results of that company.

I can't imagine giving my DNA to any company that does not me have 100% control of who can access it. And that is not likely to happen.

I know my family history and have an extensive family tree. I know I have German heritage from both of my parents. Maybe that is why I like beer!

Thankfully, no. Determining my ethnicity has never been so important to me that I'd voluntarily turn over a DNA sample to some VC-backed tech company.

Don't worry. Glass and spoon has been swiped.
That last restaurant paid with the c/c, your facial recognition profile on camera, scanned your RFID cards in the wallet, and smartphone, and did it all for you.

What a pal. Already in the .db

we are living in an almost total surveillance society. to wit the military have a cigarette box size microfluidic device. can take a tiny bit of tissue or blood or virtually any biologic fluid,, extract DNA sequence and upload directly via sat. link to FBI, langley, or a whole bunch of beltway bandits .

Adopted...genetic family unknown. I prefer to keep it that way.

I did it many years ago, just out of curiosity. Most of what it came back with in terms of genetic/health traits were pretty accurate - who knows about ancestry accuracy. I don’t really see the downside….but then again, I’m not the paranoid type.

If you never asked them to delete your data, then you can do that using the steps outlined in one of the links that I posted above. There is some talk about the data being sold.

It may not amount to anything or maybe there's not really any value in it, but these days, when one of the most valuable commodities is certain information about the general public, I would certainly not want any information about myself on the market if I could easily (in a few clicks) go through and delete that info.

(I never did 23&me, but don't see a problem with the folks that did. I was curious, but not enough to spend the money)

I wouldn't mind getting tested if they did quality work, and I know I don't have any cold cases in my rear view mirror. But if Uncle Jeffrey had some human heads in his freezer, it could be a problem for him.

You're old enough that it's probably mostly immaterial at this point. But what if you were in your 30s or 40s (since you're adopted, you probably don't have any family medical history) and there was a chance that something like this could have identified that you were likely to develop AMD, and there was some treatment available to help delay the onset?

For women especially, it might be good to know if they had the BRCA genes which predisposes them to developing breast and/or ovarian cancer (4-5 times as likely as women without the BRCA genes).

Quote:
It is estimated that one in eight women, or approximately 12%, will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

However, women with certain genetic mutations have a higher lifetime risk of the disease. It’s estimated that 55 – 65% of women with the BRCA1 mutation will develop breast cancer before age 70.

Approximately 45% of women with a BRCA2 mutation will develop breast cancer by age 70.

Women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation who overcome their breast cancer with treatment appear to have a higher-than-average chance of developing a second cancer. This is called a recurrence. Cancers related to a BRCA1 mutation are also more likely to be triple negative breast cancer, which can be more aggressive and difficult to treat.

You may find these statistics alarming. However, it’s important to note that less than 10% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a BRCA mutation. Also, with early detection, the vast majority of breast cancer cases can be successfully treated—and that’s true even for people who have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.

I’m sure it’s already out there in various databases anyway. If someone wants my dna bad enough all they have to do is pull a beer can from my trash. Like I said, I’m not paranoid, nor am I a serial killer, so it doesn’t bother me.

And if I had a relative that was a serial killer or serial rapist, I don't think I'd be upset at my DNA getting them caught.

But what if the mfs killed were all bad, and the biaches all frigid hotties with wasted genetics?

(just being argumentative here)

We are all born of bad people who did bad things at some point.
