What do we think of the Tesla model Y? Buy new or used?

Tesla has a 0% financing right now so it’s tempting. I don’t usually buy new cars but that’s a good deal. Idon’t know much about Tesla reliability. I’ve heard complaints about fit and finish but that’s about it. Does anyone here have firsthand experience with Teslas? Would you buy one used? TIA.

I wouldn't buy any current electric cars. Technology is changing too fast. I think the political scenario may affect the upkeep and daily living with electric cars.

I would totally lease one. I think Hyundai has offers for around 250 a month.

That homely toyota/subaru thing can be leased for almost nothing Ive read.

Purchasing any new EV doesnt seem compelling from a cost of ownership perspective, but would daily drive the hell out of one if my circumstances were a bit different, mostly if I had another garage stall for charging.

Used plaid for 50k or new M3P for about the same is a pretty fun commuter car. First is quicker than a 911 turbo, second is quicker than a Carrera and both handle well.

Is it the updated Model Y? There's a substantially improved Model 3 out, and the Y is following. Tesla has dropped the prices of their cars quite a bit over the last year or so in response to the EV market. What's their battery warranty? Being done with the car before the warranty is over is potentially worth a lot.

0% is worth something, depending on what you would have done without it. Other EV makers have some low APRs, and leasing is worth looking at (no loss at the end). I've had a couple of PHEVs- a Chevy Volt and a Volvo S60 T8, then several EVs- an Audi e-tron Quattro, a model 3, a Polestar 2, a Volvo XC40 Recharge, and another Polestar 2 to replace a totaled XC40. They've all served me well with zero or near zero problems. If you charge at home, they're a lot cheaper to drive than buying gas. If you have to charge the car publicly and wait, it's a different cost and equation.

You should be getting a $7,500 rebate or discount with the Y. I'm not sure if you get it on a Tesla lease, and if you have control over the lease end on the Tesla.

We've had a 2021 Mod Y since late Nov. 2020 and have 50K miles on it. So far I've only put tires and wiper fluid in/on it. I got rid of the original tires before they were worn out. Although it supposedly isn't the most reliable car, we haven't had one problem with it, except for having to pay the deductible when the windshield cracked & had to be replaced. As I've said before, we have solar panels. Our house is electric and between the house and the car (average 12K miles/yr.), we paid right around $550 last year for electricity. I installed a plug recepticle in a 240V, 30 Amp outlet in the garage to charge it, and we've never used a super charger though we have used free chargers. We use it to travel around the county, but I prefer to use my Ford van if we go on a longer trip. I just like traveling in it. We like it a lot. It's mostly my wife's car, and for us it's worked out perfectly.

I've had 3. I liked them a lot for what they are and do, but I would NEVER OWN one. Too risky, obsolete too fast, repairs are too expensive, not a long term keeper IMO.

I bought my MYP used a few months ago with 9k on it. I could have gotten a better price on it, but I needed to dump my Alfa Stelvio. Nothing wrong with it, but my dealer gave up the Alfa franchise, and there was an airbag recall. No other dealer in my state so if it broke, I'd have an expensive lawn ornament.

Back to the Model Y. I leased a new 2024 Model 3 refresh in April and it is a fantastic car. It really impressed me with its comfort, quiet and efficiency. I was figured I might as well get my MYP after that experience. The gf drives the 3 now and is happy as a clam. You can get good deals on MYs, so get one if you want. My advice would be to get the dual motor long range, as the Performance is ridiculously fast at the expense of ride comfort and range. If you can hold off, wait until the MY refresh comes out as it will have the new suspension and double pane glass all around that the 3 has.

That would depend on which insurance company you go with. We're cheap and have had Costco Connect for years. It's gone up a lot to a current $2K/yr. now. Used to be about $1,400/yr. for a long time. That's full coverage on my '20 one-ton Ford passenger van and my wife's '21 MY. We did have a claim this year - $1,500 for a windshield replacement from Tesla, when the winsdhield cracked. $500 deductable, they paid the rest. Reviews on the company are luke warm, but we've had no problrems. Every couple of years I call around to other companies (including USAA), and their rates are about twice what we pay.

My 2022 MYP replaced a 2018 Stelvio Ti Sport. Insurance was within a few dollars of each other. The big shocker was the 2024 Model 3. That is $2500 a year. No idea why it is so high as the MYP is $1200. perhaps because it is a new model, or because I leased it. All my other cars have full coverage and then some, so I still don't understand the high price.

I think the size and performance of a Y is pretty spot on for daily use.

Personally dislike the interior, hate the big screen and not impressed with apparent build quality.

We bought our MY a big part on the situation with our solar panel production. I was selling back to the power company 3 MW of power every year (25% of our generation) and being paid $100 for it at their wholesale rate. They charged 20+ times that to their costomers. I decided to put that extra generation toward powering an EV.

Performance wise, our MY is good, but I mostly drive it normally. The only time I push down on the accelerator is when passing. I agree the interior isn't anything to rave about and I guess the build quality is normal based on what I see with our car - namely no obvious flaws. I didn't expect more. It's good, economical transportation for us. I actually like the big screen. I can see the speed from the corner of my eye, whereas I would have to look down if it was displayed at the base of the steering wheel. I like the voice activated features of it, like checking the pressure of the tires, turning on the windshield wipers, etc.

Watch for Tesla to offer insurance in HI. They've got great rates and supposedly crummy customer service. Leases require 100/300 liability, which might be higher than you have on the other cars.

Wife has 22' 3. Standard range base model. Perfect city car. Fun to drive, easy to park and quiet. I bought it for the provincial/federal incentives with the plan of selling after 1 year and making a few bucks. After a week wife said "we are not selling this car!" Easily her favourite car ever. Gotta admit I really like it too. Car has had zero issues and has 38K KMs on it. We charge at home and I honestly feel like I'm getting away with something not having to get gas. I would buy another one.
