Can a cop add to a ticket
Got pulled over in the 930 by Barney fife for get this. Not using my turn signal (3 times).
It was a little side road behind a gas station and a neighborhood and no one was as around. He was sitting In The parking lot. Any my question. He “cut me a break” and wrote the ticket for not using my signal just once. After getting the ticket I said something like you sure are being petty over a signal. Or something along those lines. Well he threatened me to write the ticket for all three times. Can he add or alter a ticket after the fact. Seems like double jeopardy to me. I realize I will get picked on by the small minded because of the car. Too bad he missed me sideways pulling out a few minutes ago. I might have gotten shot |
Three incidents. Three potential tickets. I would guess.
But you could argue he was only able to physically witness one and falsified the others. He could have gone for the throat with speeding reckless etc. Slow 'er down son and say 'yes sir'. Not in the city. Insurance probably won't notice the extra p-car tax. |
I would imagine he could, double jeopardy is only that you can’t be tried twice for the same crime, you hadn’t been tried, just charged.
...and you know better than to make a snide comment to a cop, never going to make things better for you. |
So, if I read this right, you're sideways in your car, a few minutes later you get pulled over and ticketed for a much lesser infraction, and even given a break on that one.
If that's how it happened, my heart would have been pounding when the gumballs filled the mirrors and I would have been thrilled to not have to deal with an unsafe acceleration ticket. I don't think I would'a been giving any lip to the cop as he walked off. I wouldn't have said thank you, but I also wouldn't make him regret his decision to cut me a break. |
I would have spoken to his boss the next day

South Carolina may be the issue…here in MA you can drive 85 in a 65, switch lanes without signaling, and nobody blinks an eye.
|
Call the ADA. You’ll get cash bail for sure.

Every cop is different.
I've been pulled over in my Carrera while blatantly speeding and had the cop say "very nice car...take it easy with the speed" But I'm always as nice as can be when they tell me what they pulled me over for. Never piss off a cop. |
So you’re saying you’ve never seen the Chris Rock video.
|
Hell yeah if you make him mad he can keep on slamming them out. Then you have to make an extra trip back over there to fight it and miss out on something important and probably lose anyway and pay extra and for him it's just another Tuesday. He knows it. Hell yeah it's petty and dumb, you're right about that.

Never talk back to a cop. Best practice is "yes, sir," "no, sir," and "thank you."
They would not add to a completed ticket, they'd just give you another/new ticket. They can keep writing them. |
Yes, the officer can add to the citation and can get very petty. The Vehicle Code book is huge with very small print for all of the offenses. You'd be surprised how many violations almost any car can rack up. There are "supplemental citations" which are second and third pages for citations as well. Sorry you received a citation. Someone above replied advising you to call his boss, which I presume means file a complaint against the officer. Most field law enforcement officers wear body cams and your interaction most likely was recorded. If his/her behavior was other than professional, that may be your outlet; however, the citation will still stand.
The best advice I always give is be civil when dealing with officers and fight the allegations in court. If you are factually correct, you stand a great chance of winning. Good luck and drive safely, David |
Treat the police respectfully and be polite - that will get you out of 90% of tickets; trust me. :)

Smart ass in a Porsche.
Ya, you'll win this one. lol |

Why in God's name would you even hint at effing with a police officer? |
Be nice to those guys and gals. Most are great people, doing a crappy job that most of the rest of us would never want anything to do with.
Last guy who pulled me over, a motor cop going the other way when I was on my Ducati, wrote me for 52 in a 35. Sounds bad, but this was on a very, very lonely country road with no driveways, cross streets, schools, monasteries, playgrounds, nothing. Not a single vehicle went by the whole time he had me on the side of the road. Did I say "lonely"? We wound up b.s.'ing about motorcycles, his kids just starting out learning to ride, my kids who (thankfully) never showed any interest, etc. He asked me about my old Ducati, I asked him how he liked sitting on a BMW all day (he really liked the bike), and on and on. He finally said "I gotta go". I reached out, shook his hand, and thanked him for being out there for us. When I got home I emailed a copy of the ticket to my traffic attorney (along with payment) and never heard another peep. I still see the guy hiding on the side of the road every now and then, so I wave. He waves back. |
If you make three turns without signaling, the cop might have grounds to think you never signal.
Why is it petty? |
I would imagine it depends on your states VTL. He could definitely write you 3 separate tickets for the 3 offenses. He could also possibly alter the original ticket but that would be a little difficult to explain in court. He would have to list the direction of travel and the exact spot each offense occurred he cannot simply say failed to signal 3 times. You might have been better off if he did it might have voided the entire summons. One of my pet peeves is not signaling for a turn I don't understand why it is so hard for people to just turn on their signal. I have to admit I wrote quite a few of those tickets in my time. You should get a bill from a repair shop for fixing that broken directional the very next day and explain to the court that you did signal but the light was broken

if there are left only turn lanes and a line up of cars in it do you guys signal?
