Best way to lock 3 dirtbikes in the back of a truck?
For our Moab trip, I would like to be able to lock our bikes in the back of my truck for hotel stays, etc.
My Tundra has tie downs at each corner and 2 loops in the middle of the box for the gooseneck safety chains. I have some sorta flimsy bike locks we currently use but feel like we may want something a bit better for piece of mind. I've watched a ton of youtube videos and it seems like nothing gets past a zip disk on a cordless grinder, some chains just are more difficult to cut and the lock is probably easier to cut than the chain / cable. What are your thoughts? What have you done? What would you do?

I've kept motorcycles in my hotel room before. Works pretty good.
From the videos I've watched, any lock can be easily picked and if the thieves aren't that smart, they can cut anything. Lock, chain, bar.... anything. |

When we sled we try to find a motel room that we can park at the door.
A heavy chain would be pretty noisy if you tried to cut it.

I don't read of dirt bikes getting stolen much in this town. Mountain bikes, and some eBikes, that's a different story. Criminals come from the Denver area with vans and load up once in a while.
Best bet is to back the truck up against a wall so they can't be removed...

I think a couple of guys could pull a dirt bike out of the bed of a truck in seconds. Not like they care about scratching the truck.

A movement/proximity/vibration alarm sensor with internet connectivity.
And a few stickers to warn them off. Even fake cameras with "you are being monitored". That will slow them down. Air Tags RFID hidden inside panels and internals to find the equipment after-the-fact. Being parked nearby to other high-trusted humans...is paramount to anything else.

Great question I have asked myself. I think multiple big chains interlocking all the bikes into a nasty snarl is a good start. Also, back the truck up to a wall so that the gate can't come down and there is maximum effort to steal. And, as above, perhaps wheeling into the hotel room is not a bad idea. I have only left my Dirtbike on the truck once. And that was at a private home in a pretty exclusive neighborhood. I don't even like to leave it unattended for 10 minutes, they just seem very attractive to the wrong sort of people.

Have snuck one into hotel room also. I would also cover them with tarp at night, out of sight, bring all the other gear in to the room. We had trucks broken into in Gainesville Fla, bikes were in the room but gear was gone.

I have an angle grinder with a diamond disc wheel and have cut a few locks
A regular stainless master lock is cut before you have time to settle into it. Like… 1/2 second? I have a new york fahgetaboutit chain- the thick one. The links are hardened and 10+mm. I cut one for laughs and it took 20 minutes to make a pair of cuts, but i was precious about not damaging anything else. I bet if my life depended on it i could cut the chain in 10 minutes. So thats my allowance, travelling with bikes ive got max of 10 minutes going to store. Overnight in moab?? No way. Theres nothing you can do, keep them in your posession at all times. Competent thieves in moab. |

I used to run a coated steel cable through the bikes, generator and everything else in the bed. It's not foolproof but hopefully enough to deter the casual thief.

This may work for you. It contains a shotshell primer. So sounds a bit like a .22 going off next to your ear. And legal. You could set it up so if the bike is moved or the cover pulled back it pulls the pin.

Run a wire with the chain. The wire holds in the antitheft relay. Cut the wire, the siren/horn goes off. You can make something to plug into the lighter outlet, or the fuse box.
You can't remove the bikes without breaking the wire. It's way too easy to cut chains/cables with a battery zip cutter. You need a second layer of protection.

I just spent 2 weeks MTB riding in Moab. I love riding and hiking there. I use a cable lock when traveling, knowing it would only slow down anyone wanting to steal my bikes. Moab is probably one of the safest towns in the west.

I’m worried more about the hotel stays on the way to Moab than the hotel stays while in Moab. The tailgate on my truck locks so we will do that. I will also get a tarp and cover them as best I can.
I will try to cram my truck into tight spots surrounded by other cars so they can’t easily get the bikes out and of course lock them up to make it a pain in the ass.

Stay in motels where you can park the truck in front of your room. Leave a window cracked so you’ll hear them.

Take some tarps, put them on the floor and bring the bikes in at night

You realize those tie downs aren’t exactly … hardened steel … right?
Unless you run the wire and secure both ends to make a loop they’ll be the easiest thing to cut by far. |

Yes I realize this. What’s the solution?

Get a Keeway branded motorcycle cover for the bikes. Even motorcycle thieves don't want to be stuck with rubbish like that.
