Interesting article on high-mileage EV use.

Maybe partially due to the low price of gasoline right now.

Interesting article, not too surprising. I would like to borrow a Ford Lighting for a weekend to see how the mileage and range are hauling and crossing mountain passes.

Roughly twice the cost of the ICE, and the whole supporting the slave rare earth element mining in Africa. lol

I have friends that bought new hybrid SUVs in the mid west and my Cummins consistently had better mpg in winter. It’s all a false economy

Charging an EV away from home is a huge hassle and expensive. If you need to do that, get an ICE or PHEV. Pretty simple.

As the guy in the article said....."To eke out the range I travel everywhere with the heater off, which currently demands a substantial coat, hat and gloves. I’m writing to Santa for thick socks this Christmas."

I say BS to that...I would never drive the thing in the winter here.
I like my warmth.

I can see buying a Hybrid someday.

In college, I had a 64 VW Baja bug, with a Tilt fiberglass front end. And basically nothing between the wheel wells and the dash, ie, all the cold air (and water when it rained) would come through the vents, glove box door (no actual glove box) and speaker holes, during one of the coldest winters in Florida (a hard freeze broke the water line to my washing machine and my entire driveway was iced over) and I would wrap a heavy blanket when driving anywhere.

I went to College in Iowa Byron, we had a '78 VW Bus with no heater boxes as they had rusted out and we replaced the exhaust with some generic FLAPS mufflers as we had zero $. While it was a tank in the snow, driving it up to MN you had to lean out the window and scrape the front windshield while driving.

It had the heater than ran off gas in the fuel tank but it blew fuses constantly and scared the crap out of me.

Oh to be young and drive a VW with no heat in the midwest.

Low price of gasoline and in the UK are kinda polar opposites.

My first Beetle was a 69 and I had to drive it through a couple Michigan winters. The windshield defroster was useless...so I bought a 10" JC Whitney defroster bar that plugged into the lighter.

It would allow maybe a one inch strip to see out. Dangerous, but it worked.
Can't imagine doing something like that every day now.

I wouldn't want to be stuck at night, traveling with other people, trapped in a bad neighborhood and waiting inside the car.
It's just a fear based thought about safety..

Hybrid is based on gasoline but it at least provides EV option for a dozen more miles at least after the gas is gone.

I probably had 10 Beetles through the years…none new enough to have a cigarette lighter…most didn’t even have a gas gauge. Spent most winters wiping or scraping the inside of the windshield.

When I asked my dad what car I would get for my first car, he laughed and said whatever you can afford that I approve of. Dad gave me a $600 interest free loan on my 1960 VW bug. No gas gauge, but it ran and stopped just fine. I did all the work on it as I was a broke 16 year old working part time after school. 0-60 was 72 seconds if there was no head wind. With a headwind, it was infinite, as 60 was unattainable.

The heater took a long time to get heat pumping, but it worked fine for the Alabama winters, even in below freezing temps. I got 36 MPG and gas was 24 cents per gallon for the full service. I would pull in and the attendant pumped the gas, washed the windshield, checked the tires and oil, asked about the family and I usually left for $2.25 for a full tank. The first time I had to pay THREE whole dollars I was outraged. And the full service went away, so I had to pump my own gas.

My buddy and I each would dig into couch cushions and find a quarter and some dimes at my house and his. That was plenty to have enough gas to cruise around on Friday night, and get a Coke.

I took an Uber earlier this year to pick up my car from the mechanic. Some sort of Tesla, no idea what model. Back seat was like sitting on a park bench and in general the ride was crap.

It was a semi rainy day and to conserve battery, the guy kept the AC off. Fool's paradise since ambient temps and rain were in that range where windows fog over. Then he was stuck putting the AC on in order to see. Not worth the effort in my book.

My son has been driving Teslas for years (a model 3 and now has a model Y) and he doesn't seem to have these issues. I think a lot of this is overblown.

For reference, he also has an 80-series Land Cruiser, so he burns his fair share of fossil fuels.

While I once had to pay a whopping £1.12 per kWh at a Shell Recharge station, in general fast charging averages at between 85 and 90p per kWh.
So you're saying at $1.20/kWh an EV's not practical? That's hardly 'news'.
