The great tsunami panic of 2024
I'm sure you heard about our tsunami warning yesterday. I was at my desk looking over Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay when I got the warning on my phone. The warning said a tsunami was coming; get to high ground NOW. I checked for info on the earthquake on the internet and saw that it was a 7.0 about 50 miles offshore of Humboldt County. On a transform fault west of the triple junction. Not in a subduction zone. Since I'm a geologist, I knew there was nothing to worry about.
Others were not so well informed. I read reports on the local social media (next door). People were driving in both lanes of Highway 92, heading inland, causing massive grid lock and some accidents. Cars were running red lights. Schools were closed for the day, causing some kids to cry in mortal fear. People said it was utter chaos. I didn't see any of this chaos. It's just what people were reporting on the internet. I stayed at my desk and kept working while keeping an eye on the water level in the harbor. When we get a 9.0 in the Aleutians, then I'll leave. I'll just drive up to a nearby trailhead, hike up to the ridge, and watch from there.

Our idiot governor declared a state of emergency. I wonder how much that cost us.

Everything seems to be amped up to 11 these days. Absolutely breathless reporting on very minor, innocuous occurrences. Far too many "news" feeds vying for attention. The sky is constantly falling...

Wow, way to encourage mass panic.
I wonder if someone got their azz handed to them over this or if the warning protocol will be updated in the future. Although, it doesn't really matter, if there's any sort of warning of a potential issue there will always be folks that do stupid crap. I guess a certain amount of that has to be expected and weighed over the difference.

And if I hear another weather talking head use the phrases "bomb cyclone" and "atmospheric river" in the same sentence again....
