Strong car did its job. That swan neck is hideous.

I remember reading a story about the original RSR Turbo back in the 1970's; some 'suit' in the competition department hated the huge wing and instructed that it be painted black to minimize the visual impact.

Oh, how far we've come. It's been a long, long time since my heart has skipped a beat when I saw the newest racing car or supercar from Porsche.

All "skills" are perishable without constant effort.

As a former Navy pilot, all of our training and qualifications had a time stamp: The pilot would have to requal after a certain period of time, especially the hard stuff like night shipboard landings at sea.

The other parable to pilot stuff is "flat hatting": The Navy did an exhaustive study on when pilots go over "Angels Crest". It turned out that 500 hours in model to 1000 hours in model was the sweet spot for having enough skill to be good, but not enough experience to be great when they are in a self-inflicted jam and it counts.

Been there. Happy to type about it.

They just don't learn.

Another today with a Maserati...

Imagine what the carnage would be without the safety stuff in modern cars (or maybe that's part of the problem-people think they'll never die).

I guess that should have been on the dash as a reminder for the driver.

+1000
I used to follow racing religiously.
Now, I couldn't identify the newest from a 20-year-old car. I just don't care anymore.

This is one of the reasons I stopped track driving and vintage racing. With family stuff and other interests, I just didn't get enough seat time to keep my skills up. When every time in the car feels too much like the first, it's time to hang it up.

Agree, before a race it helps to run a few hundred sim laps on the same track.
It makes my first session on the real track feel like its my 2nd or 3rd session.
I also feel very comfortable racing at my longtime 2 favorite tracks, big willow and laguna seca.
Unfortunately no ACH on Iracing. ;)

Nice rig. If I had the dough for that I'd have the huge speakers and amp so the neighbors could enjoy my sim racing, too!

thanks have had it 10 years, gets a 57 inch curved screen next week.
I've crashed a few Iracing sim race cars but no injuries or tickets. ;)

It would be a terrible idea to have public roads like the ACH on sim, because bozos like MaxWrist would practice on a sim and go even harder IRL.

There's a dude in a Mercedes coupe that I've come across who is probably king of the hill FWIW. He's got stopwatches to inform him of split times to whatever landmarks he's mentally made for himself. The guy drives like he's qualifying at Spa or the 'Ring. He's clearly got loads of skill, but I shudder to think if he one day has a mechanical issue, a large animal that crosses the road, an oncoming car/bike that overcooks a turn and runs a bit wide, a bicyclist making a U-turn at an inopportune location, etc.

Bill Douglas 12-29-2024 04:02 PM

This reminds me I need to get a dashcam. A couple of days ago a guy in an Audi was racing a BMW and decided to pass some cyclists fast on a blind corner. Unfortunately I was coming the other way. A quarter of a second decision I decided not to sacrifice myself to save the cyclists and somehow the Audi made it between us with just a bit of paint off my mirror.

Ah, I miss seeing you with that car at our R Gruppe "Sports Purpose" days. I swear, I heard the Jaws music every time I saw you reeling me in like a dead mackerel in my rear view mirror. Fun times.

I hear what you, Jerry, Jeff, Paul and others have been saying about dual purpose street/track cars vs. dedicated track cars and regarding skills dilution.

Unfortunately for me, I can only have one hobby/fun car, so it needs to be "dual purpose". Getting into racing would mean starting at "ground zero", with the need to buy a suitable tow vehicle and a trailer in addition to a suitable race car. It has been suggested to me by a couple of friends involved with our local vintage racing (Jerry knows them, Eric in the Irish Green '69 911 and Mike in the Light Ivory '67 911) that my car is now "SOVREN legal" (Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts), but it's just too nice to subject it to the rigors of actual racing. Plus, there is the problem with the tow rig and trailer.

So, keeping it at just DE days, my car needs to remain dual purpose. I need to be able to drive it to the track and (hopefully) back home. But, well, my participation there has diminished, and with it, my skills. I'm on a bit of a downward trajectory in that regard, so maybe there is no need for such a hard edged car. A little "softer" maybe. I'm down to about 4-5 track days per year (down from 12-15 in the past), running mainly with a local Alfa club. The PCA DE days around here are now no more than a "GT3 canoe club", all down the ranks, where the Alfa club attracts a far greater variety of much slower cars, with a lot of vintage cars as well.

So, while I still enjoy the track, like you guys have said, every day feels like my first day. So I drive accordingly. I'm not really "using" my car to its potential anymore, so I would have no trouble if I lowered that potential a bit. And doing so would make it more comfortable and quiet for my wife, so we would not have to wear aviation style headsets to communicate...
