Service Advisor Totals Rare And Valuable ZL1E Camaro

The track recorder was able to cough up the facts, but the nannies didn't stop the driver from destroying the car.

Fortunately, not a Mustang; crowds everywhere breathe a sigh of relief.

Joyriding Car Dealer Totals $97,000 Camaro Brought In For Repairs
The owner told the service advisor not to take the car off the lot

The case is still in discovery, will likely go to trial next year unless they settle.

Here is the docket:

Ouch! I have a feeling the dealership is going to be feeling some pain on this one. And this is just one of many of these that have hit the 'Net in the past 5 years or so.

Hell, one of my college roommates had a Firebird or Trans Am. I think it was '87-89. It was a 5spd with a HO 305. It was fairly fast for the day and considering the 305. He said that he left a note taped to the steering wheel warning the wankers at the dealership to not joy ride with a note of the odometer. I have to imagine that the dealership folks laughed at his note.

I have never left a car at the dealership for service that I would care one way or another whether they drove it. I would imagine if I did, one of the key points I would go over with the service manager would be the odometer reading. I would demand that we look at it together and that he record its indicated mileage on the associated paperwork. Is that being too anal, or do guys with these kinds of high end cars actually do this?

Having done that, and having left explicit instructions to not take the car off of the lot, what if they drove it but didn't wreck it? What if you pick it up with way too many additional miles on the odometer, indicating they took it out for a spin? Is there any recourse?

Don't they (service advisors) note the mileage when they check you in? I do most of the maintenance on our cars, but that seems to be my recollection the times we've taken our cars to the dealership.

My local Ford dealer does, but I also make my own written note before walking to the service desk..not that my Mustang would be any huge monetary loss.

I brought my 993 in for some paintwork to a well respected shop that works exclusively with the local Porsche dealer and other high-end brands (I was removing some paint protection film and a small section of paint came off with it). It was a small repair limited to just the front fender. I made note of the mileage when dropping it off.

When I went to pick up the car (they did fantastic work, which I was glad for), there was nine additional miles on the car - I was pissed and told the manager. He tried to explain they drive the car to listen for squeaks and rattles upon completion. For nine miles?! Why was the stereo on when I got in the car?

Still pisses me off just thinking about it.

I still take my GT3 into the local Porsche stealership for an annual oil change and just check up. I definitely make note of the miles, but I have known the service writer for years and they have never driven it.

When I worked at a couple of Porsche dealers back in the '80s and '90s, we had an endless stream of very hot cars coming through the service department. Think highly modified 930 slant noses w/ RUF parts and adjustable boost, etc.

Nothing was ever driven other than for legitimate purposes of road testing. It would have been the immediate end to anyone's career at the dealer, even if no crash occurred. It just wasn't done. Anyone who could not keep their pants on around hot cars would not have been accepted.
