Bicyclists/DIYers Bowden Cable Help Request

Hi Gang,

I’ve been upgrading my street legal LSV (Low Speed Vehicle - Glorified Golf Cart Capable of 30 MPH)

I’ve been doing some dash work and have run into a roadblock. After installing a more secure locking glove box the hood release cable is now about 6 inches too short.

I could simply replace the Bowden cable with one that is six inches longer but that would require the disassembly of the front end of the cart to access the latch mechanism. I would rather not do that.

Does anyone know of an extension that connects to the existing Bowden crossbar stop sleeve and extends the cable six inches. I really don’t want to cut the existing cable. I was hoping there would be a clamp like device to secure the end of the cable and add 6 inches. See photos . . .

I’ve added a Bluetooth radio, usb port, outside temp gauge, speedometer, and voltmeter.

Between those two you should be able to rig it, no?

I looked up bike cable extenders such as:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/181288873909

They are expensive, but would require you to cut the existing cable end to insert.

Another option is from porkchop BMX-

https://www.porkchopbmx.com/porkchop-bmx-porkvert-bicycle-gyro-upper-brake-cab.html

This is a 2 into one splitter, but I bet it would work just using one to one.
Now, what you'd have to do is dremel a slot into one of the 3 holes on the naked aluminum piece so you could slide in your existing cable without cutting the end, but it should work, and is the cheapest thing out there. All other cable spltters seem to be in $50 dollar range.

This is another splitter that would accomodate the cable end. It is a 2 into one, but would probably require you to dremel the outside of the cable extender housing to fit your cable . Also $$$

Personally, I'd go ahead and cut the round ball off the end of your existing cable, or just get a longer cable. Sorry I couldn't find a direct plug and play. These all require fidgetting. Perhaps someone else will have a better idea.

Other random splitters ($$$ and would still require cutting cable)

At this price point and rednecking level, it might make sense to get a longer proper cable.

Iv done that many times. Just use a regular cable stop might have to drill it out to fit two cables. Make a U shaped bracket and thread it to fit bicycle cable adjusters that will hold the cable. Then you can even have the factory end at the latch

Assuming you've got a dremel tool - use a wire rope crimp such as below. I'm assuming you've got another cable you'll attach to extend the 6 inches or so you need. Cut a slot into each side of the crimp that would allow the cable to slide through and the cylindrical end would sit inside. Then epoxy or JB weld the parts inside.

Also, if you’re going to use a bicycle cable, make sure you use a heavier duty mountain bike cable.

After all the great ideas that came from this thread I decided to go this route . . .

As stated in the opening post I didn’t want to disassemble the entire front end of the vehicle to access the latch mechanism. Ideally I would install the correct length and eliminate the need for an extension. Instead, I merely wanted a way to extend the cable six inches and place the hood release handle in the locked glove box and avoid the front end disassembly.

I ordered an emergency brake cable connector to attach to the Bowden crossbar stop sleeve that attaches to the original hood release mechanism.

To extend the six inches needed to get into the new glove box I ordered a hood release handle and cable to put in the glove box extending to the emergency brake cable connector.

I should be able to cut to the right length and attach the extension to the brake cable connector.

Once all the goodies get delivered and installed I’ll update the group.

Thanks again everyone for your help
