Slight Knee Pain

This is a dumb Q but I am a stranger to knee issues, so:

There is a point on the bottom outside corner of my left kneecap that is a bit sensitive if I press it. I vaguely recall banging that knee on something while moving around the house, last week, nothing dramatic just an “ouch, jeez that hurt, ok moving on” thing.

When I flex that knee, like climbing stairs two at a time or doing a deep knee bend, there is a slightly painful twinge feeling there.

No swelling, no persistent pain, no odd feeling in the joint, no history of knee issues - occasionally sore knees when cycling, like once a year.

I am assuming I just bruised something and it will go away in not too long, with no need to seek care.

Fair enough?

I'm not a Dr and I didn't stay at Holiday Inn, but that would be what I would do, pay attention (like if it gets worse) and try to take it as easy as possible (avoid lifting cars, cast iron safes, etc...).

I think I've had discomfort in a similar spot that was due to inflamation/bursitis. When I notice that, I try to eat well (mostly avoiding lots of sugar), and it goes away after a bit.

I’ve torn very random stuff in my knee. You know when you do it. You’ll feel a pull, pop or a tear. Then Texas grapefruit swelling.

Sounds like arthritis or meniscus. **

I'd try the alternating heat and ice packs on the area. If you can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen if not then NSIDS, try that. The NSIDS help reduce inflamation, but some people can't take them.

It doesn’t bother me enough to take anything. The only thing is, I am doing squats and knee beds this week, in preparation for some skiing next week. Yeah, surprise, I am not in shape for skiing in August. I am figuring that if these exercises doesn’t make the twinge worse or more frequent, I can do them, and then the knee can get all the rest it wants later in the month.

Knees can fill up with fluids when there is a problem. And this makes for more discomfort as there is not much spare room in there. I'd take a voltaren and take it easy on the knees for a few few days.

I had a similar thing with my right knee earlier this summer. I don't recall anything I did to hurt it, but all at once I couldn't take stairs up or down normally. It felt like it was going to give out, so I had to take them one step at a time. It didn't affect my walking at all.

It took a full month to return to normal. I was told to take it very easy on it otherwise it could turn into a serious tear and surgery.

I agree.

Throttle back on the prep and do less severe skiing.

I had meniscus surgery on my left knee last year. It started out like this, then more persistent pain, etc. If it keeps up, get to a doc and get the fun scans done. If the meniscus is compromised, it won't get better.

I would be very diligent not get an overuse injury... It's very easy to over do it and the repercussions suck as we get older...

I am now 60 days into TKR ( Total Knee Replacement) on the right knee. The left one is on the schedule for spring 2025. Been ignoring the obvious for years with regular cortisone injections and other temperal remedies. In my case, 28 years as Marine Corps Infantry Officer (multiple wartime deployments), all that coupled with long backpacking trips with my family and just about anything outside activity. All that to say, get a consult and go see an Ortho specialist and get a real "sight picture" on what is going on with you knee. Or, you can diagnose yourself and hope all turns out ok... My three cents.

Can you Asian squat!?

Seriously that does not sound bad. I would just ice it twice a day and see if it doesn’t go away on its own. Cycling always helps and keeping normal BMI.

I can Asian squat, but getting up is another matter.

Will try the Voltaren when I can get to a pharmacy.

It is getting better, and wasn’t much of bad to begin with. I think I just bruised my knee a bit and the bruise is going away. The squats don’t make it twinge as much. I’m not using weight.
