Karsten spring
I installed the Karsten spring and heck of a difference. I recommend this somewhat
Easy solution for our 915 trannies. Not flawless but for now I give it 80 to 90 percent better fun factor. Like, here we go, wow, went right into second and on and on. Ok let's do standing 1 to 2, cool. Ok stop. 1 to 2 again. Wondering now where was this idea 20yrs ago! I haven't got to the backroads to really see what's up but in the little 9 mile loop, it's the feel of a different transmission. Not as sloppy and yeah, the shifter sits in the 3rd to fourth plane. Installer should have some small diameter wire. I literally squeezed the ends together in my vice. Ty wired the middle together. Out of the vice was a compact preloaded spring. Slipped the u shaped arm under the fork thing and simultaneously slid the pivot pin back into position then clipped the ty wire and locked the pin into place. Forget the carpet pieces, I'm trying this out now. Loved it. Reinstalling the shift covers and the other stuff. I got it in LA 5 days ago. Happy New Year! Cheers! ![]() ![]() |

Cool, the 911 tech board seems like it would be a better place for this post. Not that we don't appreciate it here, just that more folks there may be interested.
I drove a few 915s years ago. Some were really good, but most were just OK. This certainly sounds like an improvement. I had a car with a G50, so nothing to complain about.

I have to Google what the spring is and does. I just modified my shifter and had it disassembled Sunday….

You know the slow shifting nature of the 915 and 930 trans is intentional because of the heavy synchros…
Not to say I wouldn’t like to tighten up the 915 in my 911. The 930 trans in my 86 930 is already quite tight.

The K spring doesn't change the speed with which you row the 915, but it surely instills confidence you didn't 5->2 shift instead of the desired 5->4 when you pull back on that slot machine money shift handle.

Will it work on a 901 tranny? That is where you are more likely to have a money shift than a 915 tranny.
