A couple things that I tell people interested in fly fishing.

1. Most of my gear came from garage sales. Not particularly expensive although I have some good stuff.

2. Fly fishing isn't the esoteric zen art that it is made out to be. It is fish. They are dumb. And a river. Not rocket science.

3. Conclusion from 1 and 2: anyone can do it if they are interested.

If you live near the Columbia river you can have fun fishing AND make money. https://news.yahoo.com/news/angler-paid-record-164-000-130000126.html

I am a few miles from the Columbia. Yes. There are professional Pike Minnow fishermen. Boring.

Turn a passion into a J O B. Yuck.

On number 2, I disagree. It IS an esoteric zen art. Where you can immerse yourself to become as dumb as the fish and to enlighten yourself with the peacefulness and beauty of the river and its surroundings.

And as far as gear. I also get mine used or on sale. But truthfully, if I posted a picture of my rods and reels you'd be yelling "Honey! Come and see this! You think I'm bad, look at all the stuff this guy's got!".

Let me know if you need some Simms waders new with tags. Or Galvan fly reels, I think I cornered the market on the OB Series.

I know one Prop Master who is actually a professional bass fisherman. He's got the boat, the shirt with all the sponsor logos, the whole nine yards!

We would discuss it but I'm just not a bass guy. Not interested in the plugs, the wigglers, sonic lures, PowerBait, Pautzke's Balls O' Fire, etc.

And to think I live a 5 minute drive from the home of the record Largemouth caught in California.

It is interesting. I bait fished as a little kid, wet fly fished the Sierras as a teen, did some blue water fishing in my 20s and then spear fishing in my 30s. I rather liked spear fishing the best as I could pick out my dinner for the evening. Later my wife and I began scuba diving and my relationship with critters changed from hunter to photographer.

We moved to Idaho a few years ago and maybe I need to explore salmon fishing. They sure are tasty here. The griz really like em too and I worry a bit that I might become the new "what's for dinner tonight".

I really enjoyed fly fishing when I was in Michigan because you're actually 'doing something' most of the time. Kayak fishing is not bad for the same reasons but can get boring. Last time I went fishing (bass) on a boat a few months ago I wanted to slice my jugular vein after an hour. The trip lasted 4 hours on a small lake. Brutally boring.

Fishmas in the Sierra's begins in April.
I go every year right after memorial day and before school gets out.
Weekday mornings on South Lake to yourself sometimes.
