I almost fell for it - don't you. PSA

My tax season PSA....
I got an email from my brokerage firm to sign up for electronic delivery of tax forms. I thought, okay, and clicked the link. I was routed to a screen prompting me to log in.

That's when it dawned on me. It's a scam.

I was about to give away access to my 40+ years of hard earned savings. I was a few clicks away from running my life. I didn't log in. I closed the session instead. I don't need forms delivered. I know where to get them.

Please keep a vigilant eye out for scams. Some look really official. And never, ever, log in from an email link.

Now my rule of thumb is to never respond to unsolicited requests for anything including requests to log on to anything.

If I didn’t ask for it, I don’t want it.

Any direct link in an email, I raise my BS meter to max. I will ignore the link, and go directly to the real web site, and log in normally. If there is no issue, I delete the email, and go on with life.

Even googling some banking institutions on your own could possibly be a fake site.
