So how does a southern drawl say it?

schwanka ... or YooooSwankaaaa or ???

My niece bought one for me during her last year of college in Poland 25 years ago ... been stashed away ...stretching (my intent).. or my head shrunk... both collecting dust... rediscovered a few weeks ago...

It now fits

No labels ... mebbe handmade... prolly...

I need it now .... but it's at my parents house

I'd pronounce it "shapka".
Since that was what it was called when I picked mine up in Moscow back in the 90s...

Interesting

Ushanka or shapka ushanka is a traditional Russian fur hat. It has ear flaps that might be tied at the chin to protect ears and neck from the cold or fixed at the back of the head. It is known in the west as simply ‘shapka” (which actually means “hat’ in Russian) and its name ‘ushanka’ derives from the Russian word ushi (“ears”).

What’s interesting is that the whole back half can also fold down to protect the neck as well as the flaps for the ears. It’s too warm to wear under most circumstances - I only ever pull it out when it’s below 0F or as a conversation piece.

I will rarely wear it ... but on mornings in the teens like we are having this week ... I'm gonna wear my new "hat" ...

I've mostly gone hatless my whole life ... not even a ball cap until my 40s .... I sweat wif 'em on... but I always wear at least a ball cap now... or wider brims for sun protection... always.

As a kid ... with a rare snow and sledding ... I wore a toboggan on my head .... but not many times.

Alan .... I wuz not a sled-head

I'll post a pic later .... mine is all black... I have no idea what tho... don't care.

Might be a big azz black rat... but it'l ll be warm

Still considering Bob's suggestion for formal occasions too ....

They issued similar when I was in the AF (for very cold weather). Called them winter helmet liners. Nice and warm.

Looks like they are available surplus.
