Mazda… A Simple Modern Vehicle

In true Japanese fashion, Mazda’s implemented the hornet headlight look that we’ve seen exclusively within the Kawasaki motorsports line. Don’t let the aesthetics fool you though, these things are like a bug zapper on steroids. After dark you’ll see spots by the specular reflection off highway signage.

Hiroshima’s Revenge to every American SUV that sacrificed build quality and shoddy R&D, as under the hood, these big ol' NA engines breathe without the need for a perky turbo. This year’s model couldn’t care less about fancy cylinder deactivation or auto start-start, thanks to a “chip shortage.” Throw in a real automatic that actually shifts, not one of those rubber-band CVTs, and you, Mazda, is very underrated.

Yeah, and they actually handle ok if you push enough to compress the squish.

"compress the squish"

Greg, if you make T-shirts I need a medium.

It is past time for manufacturers to build a simple car without all the non federally mandated gizmos. Lower price, and more function. Only when the manufacturers see big sales of the simple cars with the ton of gizmos be scaled back, and more focus on driver engagement. Of course all the federally mandated stuff has to be on the car for us to buy it.

id10t 01-28-2025 05:12 AM

always loved my mazdas, but the wifes 2020 cx30 pisses me off with its various "features"

what federally mandated gizmos are ruining driving?

seems to me its the market that's obsessed with useless gizmos not the feds. fed didnt mandate infotainment, or subscription based heated seats, or that everything became a "crossover" ... the market asked for all those things.

The biggest is the safety features, automatic emergency braking, lane assist etc

Wifes cruise control is unusable in any kind of traffic. Autobrakes kick in going around curves with oncoming traffic and at the bottom of steep hills

Winshield wipers delay system is unusable - it speeds up if a little more water is on the windshield but it never slows down. And you cant disable the autospeed up (dont think this is a fed thing)

Add in not being able to charge my phhone without it going into carplay mode etc - all I want it to do is charge the darn thing

Interesting. I was just looking at the 1.5T Accord for my wife. Only comes with a CVT.

I was super skeptical.

How does Mazda quality stack up against Honda / Toyota?

I am a little bit of a Luddite.

What make do you have?

My Acura system is great.

I can choose to engage normal cruise control or adaptive. Adaptive works great so that is my default. I don't use any cruise in heavy traffic.

My emergency braking has also been flawless. I can choose the distance which it activates. I have it set to the latest activation. It has activated one time in 9 months. And that was in a situation where I was going for the brake. It beat me by a split second.

My auto wipers don't turn on or off when I would turn them on or off. Functionally it is acceptable. I do leave it in manual.

Auto highbeam works OK. I use it. Could get along without it.

I have wireless charging. Just toss it in the tray. It does charge sloooooooooow. I keep a 6" charging cord plugged in use it more often or not.

I turn off auto stop/start. I press the disable switch without even thinking.Lane assist stinks. I never use it.

Lane departure is OK. I have it set to the widest setting where I have the tire to be completely over the lane stripe. You must use turn signals or the system will give me a hand shake.

Blind spot warning is terrific Works flawlessly.

Parking sensors are OK. I could do without.

Two thumbs up for wireless Android Auto.

Two thumbs up for keyless entry and autolock.

Overall, the tech I actually use is much appreciated.

I would rather have a conventional auto though the Honda CVT isn't bad..

Mazda interiors are superior. The Honda infotainment controls are superior. Toyota interiors don't seem as nice.

I'm looking to replace my ancient Infiniti FX35 and the CX-50 Hybrid has caught my eye recently. I'm intrigued by their use of the proven Toyota Synergy Drive engine/drivetrain.

For instance, the below is me and my mighty-mighty 1983 Mazda GLC. I am leaving Milton, Fla after flight school, early 1984, headed to San Diego. Great trip in a great...

I sold my 1971 BMW 2002 to buy the GLC because I really wanted A/C. I know.

I too had a 1983 GLC. Hatchback in white. My first ever new car off the dealer lot. Drove great, so cheap to fuel and maintain. Many miles, many stories. Thanks for the flashback.

Didn't GLC stand for Great Little Car?

Yes, according to the ads. Became the 323 a couple of years later.

(Tangent, the Dodge Omni "Shelby" version of that little hatchback was the GLH.)

After 30 miles, i turned off all those safety features. The AEB must be turned off manually after each start up. Annoying. I’m sure i can unplug the camera and that will end that.

I like the cruise control slowing when running up on traffic and speeding up after.
