selling stuff, I suck at it. its like throwing money away for me.

haha..I dont EBAY or sell to make money. I know this. I sell to get rid of stuff.

I dont collect anything. no chatzkies or chingaderos for me. no snow globe display, no comic books or baseball cards.. I did have a few vintage Coleman lanterns. I put two up on Facebook marketplace just trying to make a hole in the garage shelves. I got one sold in 5 minutes. oh-o. hahah...I way underpriced it!!!! I won't say how much, but I literally gave it away. it is not that common of a lantern.

oh well. focusing on my first statement of my post. . there is a reason I didnt go into sales to make a living. I suck.

the dude that bought it was wild eyes and salivating when he paid me. it was weird.

he wanted to meet me at my house. hard no...we met at a gas station.

Yep, get rid of stuff. If it puts a little money in your pocket, that's the whipped cream. If you had it priced such that it sold really quickly so you didn't have to deal with a bunch of wankers, then that's the cherry on top.

I am 180 from Vash. I make money every single time. I am simply wired that way. Have since I was single digits. Yes. I am in sales.

Also, the key? You make the money when you BUY, you can't push the market for more $$$ when you sell.

I am even more radical than that.

I GIVE stuff away to Habitat for Humanity. They still sell stuff underpriced but they get funds to help people obtain a home. I underlined "help" because they don't just give it away. You have to earn it"
Quote:
Does Habitat for Humanity give houses away?

Houses are not given to anyone. Habitat for Humanity builds houses with those in need and then sells the houses to homeowner partners. Mortgage payments can be kept affordable for families unable to obtain conventional financing for a home through low down payments, no-profit/no-interest loans, and volunteer manpower. Habitat homeowners typically have incomes that are 25-50 percent of the median area income. Homeowner’s are required to invest 300-400 hours of “sweat equity”—time spent building on their own house or other Habitat houses, or attending homeownership and financial peace classes. Habitat applicants must meet specific criteria.

How does Habitat homeownership work?

Habitat builds simple, decent homes through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, with the help of the homeowner families. Habitat homes are sold at no profit, and financed with affordable no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Habitat for Humanity that supports the construction of new homes.

Where does the money to build a home come from?

Individuals and organizations donate money that is used to purchase land and materials. Habitat is not a government agency.

What is sweat equity?

Homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (“sweat equity”) into building their own home and the homes of others. Sweat equity helps reduce the cost of the home, increases the personal stake of the family members in their home, and fosters the development of partnerships with other people in the community.

Why is Habitat needed?

There are three main reasons for the affordable housing crisis in America:

The rise in home construction costs,

The decrease in real wages,

And the loss of millions of affordable apartments during the past 20 years.

My line is $50. If I can sell it for at least $50, I’ll invest the time. Anything less gets thrown in the trash or donated. There’s a really good nearby Christian charity place that provides furniture, clothes, etc to families in need, women’s shelters, etc. I like to think about my stuff making someone happy that’s in need. I don’t really care for Goodwill but I’ll donate stuff to them as well.

I am SO not a salesman ... I lose $ on every sale but mitigate those losses by just giving stuff away instead

We used to have a place that we'd donate stuff by our old home, and have also donated some stuff to GW.

We use FB Marketplace to get rid of things too big or too much hassle to haul for donation. Always very cheap. Before this last move we had a leather sofa and loveseat, almost new...put it on FB for $60 and it was gone in 10 minutes. Mahogany dining room set, $100...gone. With all the hassles of moving, the real value is that someone else hauls it off.

Depends on the item, but the greatest joy to me is knowing somebody is getting use out of something stealing my space.

With things like non-appliance cars I am more into trying to find the car its ideal owner rather than maximizing revenue.

I think most folks here have been through the thing

where you price an item absurdly cheap because you want it gone

and those buyers turn out to be the biggest ball-busters. Not usually worth it.

Nope, but then I don't think I've sold more than 5 items online. Most of my selling has been in the past when the missus organized a yard sale. Then I price it fairly +a small bit so they feel like they get a deal. Our yard sales have always been Fri morning and Sat morning. I don't want to take anything back in the house on Sat, so prices continue to drop if stuff hasn't sold.

I don't remember any weirdness in the few items that I've sold online (I honestly can't remember anything specific, but I'm pretty sure I've sold 2-3 things online through Craigslist.

The problem of course, as vash alluded to, is that the minute the buyer is taillights down the street someone sends you something like this:

(granted, these cassettes are NOS sealed in the OP, but still...
Lotta money for Blink 182 or Notorious BIG, or Nirvana..."No lo-ballers; I know what I got!"

I've been trying to get rid of stuff in front of the big move.

Sold some Porsche books to a few Pelicans, easy transactions.

Put some furniture up on FB "free stuff". There must be bots, "I'll take it, can pick up tomorrow!".
No response afterwards, then notice they responded at 1:45 AM PST. I hate "tire kickers".

Just had my chimney inspected by a great guy, really nice. I gave him my Shop-Vac, figured he could use it or give away.

His name? Sean Spencer Tracy. Guess who his Great Grandfather is? And I just watched Bad Day At Blackrock. We had a great time talking about movies, Kate Hepburn and the people he's met through his GG's deaf foundation and tributes to career. Only in LA.

I had a Sony Play Seat and Logitech wheel and pedals with feed back sitting in a corner collecting dust. I put it on CL and an hour later had a guy drive an hour to get it.

I thought a fair price was around $100 and the guy was so happy when he saw it that I thought he might start crying.

I like those kind of sales much better than if the guy feels like he got screwed for paying too much.

I put 3 Werner ladders up on Offer Up. An 8' and 10' fiberglass and a 3 piece 24' extension ladder (great for homeowners only 8' retracted).

$225 takes all three. Not even a bite.

I've had stuff worth $100-150 in a yard sale priced at $30-45 and bottom feeding slime offer me $10. I told them "NO!" If they ask what I'lll take I double the price and tell them to get off my property! I told my wife I'd rather burn stuff than do another yard sale.

I've probably had folks do the same before and just forgot about them. It's entirely possible that my answer would be to go up on the marked price for folks that made silly offers.
