UK restaurant no longer caters to vegans

Quote:
A restaurant in the U.K. has decided to stop catering to vegans because its owners were apparently fed up with their "holier-than-thou" attitude.

The Kitchen at London House on the Isle Wight said it posted its new vegan-less menu for the owners’ new restaurant and received swift backlash.

"[S]ome nasty people have felt it’s their place and right to criticize this fact," the restaurant wrote in a Facebook post. "You have to ask yourself, do you think that bullying someone is going to endear them to you? Is it going to make them rethink their decision…maybe I should? NO it does not!"

The owners chided vegans for expecting a restaurant to adapt its menu to suit their preferences, noting that if they had gone to a vegan restaurant, they wouldn’t expect to be served a steak.

"You have chosen your lifestyle, it’s not a medical condition that you’ve been forced to endure through no fault of your own," the restaurant said. "Your choice does not fit with our style of cooking. We respect your choice, and expect that you respect ours."

Apparently, wokeness is alive and well in other places besides N America.

This is fantastic.

You made a choice to eat a certain way. We've made a choice to not cater to that. We respect your choice. You should respect ours.

I like that. On a related note, I'm thinking about the issue. In the following situation

We opened a business that does X. X does not cater to specialized needs/desires XY. Is that discrimination against the XY folks?

My first reaction is "no, that's not discrimination."

But I believe it could be used as discrimination. Is discrimination universally bad? If you have to cater to every specialized group, does that potentially end up discriminating against other groups.

I'm still leaning towards that it's perfectly fine to say "we do X" and if you require us to do XY or X^2 or X-3, we are sorry that we can't accommodate you, but we are happy for you to go somewhere else.

I have heard folks say that "discrimination is bad" period. And I guess from a certain point of view, that might be true, but I believe that's a myopic view, because when trying to not discriminate against anything, chances are you are going to have to discriminate against something. It's just that often times, folks think that certain discrimination is bad, but other discrimination is OK.

The oldest bar in Oklahoma, is in small town 35 miles from my house. They are a bar, but most famous for fried chicken. For many years, they had a menu of fried chicken, with a side of sliced pickles and some bread. That was all. The place is packed from 4:30 until closing. Vegans complained and they said listen we sell all the chicken we can cook, and we are not going to spend time futzing with a vegan or vegetarian meal. If you don't want fried chicken, there are other restaurants that cater to you. Now they are expanding to some other foods, but no vegetarian or vegan meals. Roast beef sandwiches, BBQ, homemade chili.

And don't expect to order a breast and a leg, they sell fried chicken and it is one entire cut up chicken, just the typical parts.

Yeah, how in the world is this an issue? It's like getting mad at a Toyota dealer for not selling Nissans.

how do you identify the vegan in the room ?

The last 2 vegans I met ate meat "on occasion", yet the both were eating meat in the subsequent 2-3 times I saw them.

Nothing against being vegan though, definitely not for me. I can almost see being a vegetarian or no red meat kind of person but eating balanced and well as an actual vegan seems like a massive PITA

Interesting. I thought passing along the CC charges to the customer was verboten.
I also paid the State of Michigan a $19 convenience fee when registering a vehicle but they said gov had a exception.

Convenience fee

A convenience fee is charged when a customer uses a form of payment that isn’t customary for the business. For example, a business that typically accepts online payments may offer the option to pay by phone for a fee. Convenience fees are legal in all 50 states but have to be clearly communicated at the point of sale. Additionally, a convenience fee can only be imposed if there’s another preferred form of payment as an option.

For many years, they accepted cash or check only. No plastic. There is a bank next door, and they had an ATM.
I always just paid cash when we ate there.

This kind of clickbait is intentionally manufactured to create bias confirmation - it confirms to people that their biases, hatreds, and opinions have some basis in fact. It gives them the warm fuzzies and allows them to feel "holier than thou." Yes, it's a sad state of affairs, but it suckers people into putting their eyeballs on ad pages so it's here to stay.

Y'all think it is not news when a business pushes back against woketarianism, especially a euro business.

Clickbait headlines piss me off. I usually don't click on them. Sometimes I'm curious about the content but won't click on them just because of the stupid clickbait headline.

"you won't believe what happened next" - and I'm not going to find out
"you'll never believe" - I probably already know
"the # best ____ ever"

And if they include a pic of a hot chick or part of a hot chick, I'm even less inclined to click.

I don't personally see this article as being "clickbaity" I'm not sure how that even came into the conversation.

I get why some restaurants make that choice, but it does feel like they're missing out on a good chunk of potential customers. A lot of places manage to offer vegan options without much hassle. If an event needs to accommodate different diets, royalcrystalevent.com might be worth checking out since they handle catering and customization pretty well. Making sure everyone has something to eat doesn’t have to be a big ordeal.
