Best tool to cut these off?
On the muffler there are two 2” diameter pipes coming off muffler. Porsche then put tips on by I believe resting on top on these pipes and then welding tips to muffler at contact point. I want to get rid of tips but hopefully keep the two outward pipes coming off muffler. Suggestions for tool. I have a grind and can get a sawzall.
Thanks. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Maybe I just cut off so the tips and two outward pipes are flush and leave remaining.
I have a muffler shop to weld on new tips. They said either leave the existing muffler on and they will take care of or put on cut up muffler and they can work with that. They don’t care. My thoughts are they quoted me 2-300 for job but I don’t think they know what is involved though I sent them pictures. They said they might have to lower muffler to get the weld all the way around (top end of price). Being a boxster, I think the whole muffler needs to come off due to design. Could be wrong but seems that way. My other thought is, why cut up a perfectly good muffler when I have one that is only good to modify since I already cut up. Keep original on shelf or sell. |

The guy that stole my Catalytic converter only uses a sawzall and is done in a minute

Use a 4 1/2" grinder with a name brand .045" thick cut off wheel. But I would use this outside of the garage.

I would think leaving a small amount of pipe would make it easier for the shop to weld on new tips. New tips slide over old pipe and they weld around the perimeter. I would use a sawzall or circular cutting tool, either way with a metal blade.

I’d use a sawzall and clean up with a finger sander. Ymmv.

Ive seen stupendously bad work done by muffler shops. Going wild with the stick welder and dripping slag. On an old truck i was delighted by the price. Could be you found a gem of a shop but check their work before you let them work on your car. Maybe find a welder and have them weld the pieces together properly.

I would use a grinder with a 6" disc. Clean, even single cut.
6 in. x 0.045 in. x 7/8 in. Thin Kerf Metal Cut-Off Disc

Thanks everyone. The intent is to leave those two inner pipes.
Somebody recommended me the shop so my fingers are crossed. |

I’ve had really good luck with a local shop that does hot rod builds. Definitely wouldn’t trust the nearest muffler shop to do anything custom.

Just welding tips on, shouldn’t be to bad. I’d have my son do but it seems I need to buy different wire and gas for stainless. Am I incorrect?

I'd take the muffler off the car. Can't do a nice job otherwise.
Cut off wheel for sure, but I'd get the shop to do the cutting and welding. It will take them 2 minutes and then there will be no excuses if they botch the job. I hope you have a shop that you have used before and can trust. I went into a Speedy last week to get a slip joint on my Tundra exhaust re-welded and they wanted $369 + tax. I could not get out of there fast enough!

Were it mine?
Muffler off the car. I'd hand it to my welder, he'd weld the new tips on better than a muffler shop. Probably with a TIG. |

For welding on two tips I wouldn't worry about buying SS wire and special gas . If your son is a decent welder have him do it . If you are going to have a shop do it I would do two things in advance .
1. Measure how long you want the new tips to be . Do you want them flush ? Or to stick out one inch ? 2. Take the muffler off , you will get a hack job if you don't . There is no way to get a good weld on top with the muffler installed the clearance to the valance cutout is too close in my opinion .

The boxster muffler is a bit of a a pita to remove. I think to do it properly, they would have to tack on the tips. Lower and adjust. When right, remove and finish and reinstall. I’m not a pro so I could be under estimating a good shops ability. The shop has been around a while and is not a chain. Unfortunately I can’t find a muffler that has the look I want that is not a 2 can (likely drone). Thanks

Regarding having son do, he’s never done stainless so is that an issue. He welds full time but big stuff. Any suggestions?

Have him practice on the scrap pieces before he tries to weld the final ones.

I assume you are using a MIG welder? Flux core wire is available for stainless does not req shielding gas. With reg stainless wire argon or a mix of argon C02. I would not weld or tack with muffler on the car. Stainless welds just like mild steel.

He's probably a better welder than the shop you want to use .
