Final Voyage, SS United States

A Grand and Beautiful Lady she is!!! She looks so proud and majestic even in her final days.

I'd scuttle the cruise ship!

From what I understand, she will undergo scuttle preparations in Mobile, Alabama, and will be sunk off the coast of Ft Walton Beach, Florida, as a reef for recreational diving.

Is her sister ship 'America' still around?

My parents had friends that used to regularly cruise on both ships.
For a me, 9 year-old, the 'Bon-Voyage' parties were memorable, and delicious.

I think it is kinda cool that she will rest in the waters off Okaloosa Island, my old stomping grounds!!! It would've been nice to see her restored, but at least she will be resting in a good place.

I wonder how many divers are going to get trapped in it. Maybe they removed all the doors?

More than interesting video. Tons of science and planning involved with the tow. Impressive!

Not being a diver, I'll never see it anyway, but how deep is it going?

Anyone know what beast of a tug is pulling her? Are they refueling said tug or tugs along the way?

Vinik 6, a 5700 hp tug, older but capable. There were 4 other tugs alongside the ship to provide for control and steerage as she transited out of Delaware River/Bay but I don't believe they're along for the open water tow.

I think it would be kind of surreal being out in the open ocean with a small crew of a couple guys and that massive ocean liner in tow. Probably pretty breathtaking seeing it alone out there.

Too bad we can't save her. She'd make a great Floating White House.

That’s really cool. The lines on that ship rival any modern cruise liner.

Totally agree!!! She has very sleek lines. Such a shame that she will slip beneath the waves soon.
