I want a hollow body electric guitar…

My daughter has an older Gretsch ProJet and it’s pretty sweet.

I’m sorta jonesing for a Fender Starcaster and have played a couple (Squires) that I like.

Then I played a few Gretschs and an Ibanez… one stood out, a Gretsch 2024T. It is almost acoustic and has great sustain.

I love the Starcaster but this Gretsch just sounds better unplugged.

What would you do? Play more Starcasters until one sticks or just go buy that Gretsch?

I want something I can play unplugged that actually sounds like something. What else should I try? My budget is up to $1500.

I've always loved this idea but never did it.

I've always been intrigued by Godin A6's. Here's a good demo:

And Rik Emmett from Triumph playing one:

I bought and subsequently gave my son a sweet Epiphone Dot. A basic 335 knockoff. Grabbed it at a pawnshop for under $200. It is a killer and very versatile guitar. Not much for acoustic playing.

Just a data point.

Gretsch 6120 all the way. I think they make one in Korea that is a "budget' model. Love these hollow bodies.

Check out this Taylor T5z- it gets mentioned a lot. Even if you got 25-30% off, it would be above your budget. I could suggest a Taylor dealer who discounts heavily and doesn't charge sales tax to out of state buyers...

Depends on budget but the Gretsch are pretty sweet. Also the Epi Sheraton, Casino, and 335. I had a Lawsuit Era 335 Japanese knockoff for 30 years and liked it but found it too bulky to gig. I sold it too soon and as always, wish I kept it.

Why not build a hollow/semi-hollow body? I did a "335 kit" from StuMac and added Seymour Duncan pickups, coil splitting pots and finally a Varitone switch that I got from a fellow in Delaware selling on Reverb. Took about a month total and there is no other like it anywhere.

Unclebilly, I have a really nice Gretsch 5120 with a Bigsby. Bought it about 15+ years ago.
(I believe the 5120 model is what Gretsch called the 6120 that was made in Korea)
I'll bring it back to Calgary with me next week and you can test drive it for as long as you want- if you'd like.

I ended up selling it, just don't play electric much and when I do it's Telecasters. That's why I suggested the Godin A6. It's a bit middle of the road between acoustic/electric. For a hybrid I'd also look at Thinline Telecasters but Gretsch's and hollow body Gibson's are hard to beat

Might I suggest a Prestige? I am a little biased as I have 5 guitars from them, all are unique to me, plus another 1/1 being built. But, they can create anyting you want, you pick the finish, the wood, the pick ups, the hardware....

Became good friends withe Mike, the owner. They are here in Vancouver, and I can facilitate an introduction if you would like.

Cheers

Find an old artist series Ibanez from the 70’s 80’s something built well out of good materials that’s not going to depreciate 60% once you take it out the door. Right now the used market is flooded that should help. An example,

Over a 35 year period, I was lucky enough to hear Jerry Miller of Moby Grape
fame play in the Pacific NW. He played a early 60's Gibson L-5 CES Florentine
guitar. He definetly was one with that guitar. Many fond memories.
