I do the same thing after spending money on tackle and fuel and then release the fish that I catch!

I even file the barb off the hook so the fish I release aren't injured too much.

I caught a $15K bass once ... then a $7.5K one .. many days later ....

Ya got to dollar cost average the boat per fish over time ....

Then I bought a pond or two

I'm only river fishing with a fly rod so $$$ don't matter to me.

Umm, one day salmon fishing my keep the last one thing didn't work out so well. I did a couple of casts and caught a nice big salmon, let him go (a kiss I guess, I just can't remember) then nothing for the rest of the day.

I only throw the small ones back. We're going after wiper and walleye, to eat.. I ate this one. Brined and slow smoked, better than any salmon.
